More reliable, HD+case or prebuilt external HD?

Hello All,
I am looking to back up my photos on an external HD (also DVD) and was wondering which is more reliable:

a internal HD + a HD case or a pre-built external from one of the big name companies?

Is there even a difference?
ALSO, I just thought of this question, whenever I reformat my main drive (RAID 0) and I install my previous spare hard drives (non RAID) the information from the spare hard drives cannot be read. I always though you could just plug and play drives as long as you were using the same motherboard as before?

Thanks,
Eddie

Neither is more reliable.

Get the cheapest one for your budget and backup the drive onto dvd's or something, now thats the most reliable method.

The externals seem to run cooler and are often bundled with some software
