More RAM or faster RAM? What's best?

Right now my brother has 2x512MB of pc4200 DDR2 in his Dell Dimension... I just bought him 2x1GB of pc5300.

I know if I use all 3GB together they will run at the slower speed, is it better to go with only 2GB but faster speed?
 
More RAM. You most likely would not notice the slower RAM speed.
 
If it's XP 32bit just use the 2GB for dual channel if possible...no need for 3GB on XP for most users.

If Vista use as much ram as possible though!
 
Hmmm, well it is XP 32bit... but I kind of had a feeling the slower speed wouldn't be noticeable (especially for what he uses it for).
 
If your filling 4 spots you still should get dual channel out of it (even with diff size sticks) so the speed should be the same, all sticks will run at 4200 then like before...

Or are you saying you'd run the new memory at 5300, in that case yes the speed difference would not be noticable from 4200 to 5300 so go with 3GB.
