Hi all,

First post here so bear with me please if this has been done a million times before :) .

I've been looking into high end gaming performance recently as its time I upgraded...and no, its not for Doom 3 :p

There is one question I can't seem to get answered though and I thought I'd throw it to the forums and see if anyone can shed any light on it for me:

Is it better to have more or higher quality memory?

The example I was thinking of is 1gb of Mushkin or OCZ PC3700 vs 2gb of PC 3700 a.n.other brand. I know i'm likely to get more faulty stuff/higher latency with the cheaper memory but given I can get enough sticks of it working it would save me 1/3 of my total memory cost and double the amount I have....

There's a gold star and a chocolate chip cookie for the person with the correct answer :D

It's better to have a balance between the two than to go extreme in either direction.

Unless you are planning on working with large video files or designing buildings on your pc, you don't need to have 2 GB of mem.

The best solution for you (and anyone IMO) is to get a GB of Mushkin 2-2-2 special. You'll get the benefits of having a large amount of ram in your box as well as having the tightest timings on the market.
 
lol thanks for the /slap ... excuse my ignorance but umm why not mention them in the same sentance?

I guess I was considering getting 2gb as I like to run 438 instances of Microsoft Outlook at the same time....it makes me feel like i'm getting value for money ;) j/k

Seriously though, the advice both here and at Anand seems to be that 2gb is a waste of time and i'm better off with a decent brand. BTW this whole chain of thought came about through reading recommended specs for the upcoming big MMO releases...
 
I haven't seen those yet,
but if you are planning on playing games with humongous worlds you would be better off getting a Vid card with 256MB or RAM than getting 2GB of RAM IMO.
 
Agree on the card....picking up a 256mb 6800 GT as soon as I can find a UK that has one in stock.

In case your wondering the machine i'm building is:

A64 3500+
MSI K8N Neo 2 or Gigabyte K8NSNXP-939
1GB decent branded memory
2 x mini Raptors :)
256MB 6800GT - can't get the pre OC'ed brand here in the UK :(
Antec Trueblue or similar 480w PSU
Lian-Li PC60 or toying with the idea of the Antec Super Lanboy
