"Okay, a friend of mine -- owner of nvision.pl to be exact has just returned from CeBIT. Anyway, he talked to NVIDIA representatives and they told him NV40 will have support for 24-bit floating point precision amongst other things that were confirmed more or less. Below bit is translated (by me) from Polish:

"It's hard to get anything out of NVIDIA representatives. It is obvious they don't want to reveal any information about their next generation GPU. On the other hand, NV40 will premiere very soon and there is already a handful of information available. If you were to ask me about exact specs, I'd have to kill you. However I can always throw in some bits of information. It is worthy to look at current specifications (which were mentioned in our news section before) -- it is very similar to actual NV40 specs. NV40 will also sport hardware MPEG1 / MPEG2 / MPEG4 coding / decoding as well as support for 3D Shadows. NVIDIA has also reworked their 16-bit floating point precision usage -- FP16 and FP32 are said to work flawlessly now. Additionally NV40 will have FP24 support. The above information does look interesting. Did I mention, NVIDIA confirmed 16 pipeline architecture?"

While I talked to Polar about pipeline architecture, he could not confirm full 16 pipeline design. NVIDIA just told him it has 16 pipelines, they did not want to say more. Another important thing is that, NV40 will be widely available after the launch.

Now about R420. He also talked to ATI, but whenever he mentioned the chip, they started to talk about something else. One thing worthy to note is that new drivers will have a totally different look -- a more clean look. Also, ATI did not want to skip driver versions on purpose, someone just "messed it up" -- so no more skipping."

About time ATI revamped their driver look. Man is it horrid.

I really hope the new ati drivers have the game profiles like the new forceware.

MPEG2 / MPEG4 coding?

is that suppose to be encoding? If nvidia has hardware MPEG 2 /MPEG4 encoding i will gladly fork over $500 in a heartbeat.

Does this mean we'll be able to buy it after April 14?

Who cares if it´s available. It´s pointless getting a NV40 when we don´t know what the R420 will do. I mean why buy the NV40 just to see the R420 totally smokes it. Could very well be the truth.

I don´t mind paying 500$ or something for a video card but I want to make damn sure it will at least be the top performer for some months.

There ya go.....finally someone that makes perfect sense. It did take me a little while to come to that conclusion myself, but I'm glad I did.

Yeah, if only. :p

I wouldn't go as far as to say that they're horrible but I would welcome a change. For sure.

I doubt it will get smoked... it may get 'beat' but I doubt smoked.
I'll buy whichever comes out first, after I've read a review or two. Obviously I won't buy it if it's a stinking turd.

Heh, a valid point.....but I'd still wait until we have both cards "on the table" so to speak. Considering ATI taped before Nvidia I'm thinkin' that they're just holding back, ready for a really smokin' surprise launch.

I can hardly wait.

I think that they are waiting to launch right before nvidia does in hopes to upstage nvidia. as nvidia is launching tuesday the 13th of april I expect ATI to launch either monday of that week, or friday of the week before. If the NV40 turns out to blow away the r420 a la the nv30 vs the r300, at least ati won't be trying to push a product into the marketplace their competator already owns. (like nvidia launching the nv30 several months after the superior r300 takes over the enthusiast market). plus if the r420 turns out superior than ati has another enthusiast market coup on their hands, though probably not on the same scale as the last one.

We'll see.....but that's definitely a very nice possibility.

Anything that invoves me seeing new stuff sooner is ok in my books.

Fascinating speculation. The FP24 support doesn't make any sense, as a couple of people in the thread noted.
Hopefully "The Baron" is right about FX/INT16 precision still being supported. I don't care so much, but the folks who bought 5900's sure will.

Absolutely. If the NV40 does full MPEG-4 encoding in hardware at good speed and doesnt have a bunch of DRM nonsense built into it, it will be worth every penny.

hahahaha cornelious0_0, im not an nvidia fanboy, I don't know its just all this speculation saying how NV40 has this and that has gotten to me

I will admit that it's very reminiscent of the nv30 launch way back when.....but you've gotta come at this with a clean outlook. Give 'em a chance to wow you once more. :D

Yes isn´t the tradition strong with this one. Everyone hear about the NV30 and thinks it gonna rock. Everyone hear about the NV35 and thinks it´s gonna rock. Now everyone here about the NV40 and thinks it´s gonna rock.

Whereas R300 was a stealthy one. R350 still more stealthy than the NV35 and R420 way more stealthy than the NV40.

I for one can´t say that I think NV40 will be more impressive than the R420.

I find them much easier to use than nVidia's Forceware.

As do I, as long as they don't take a step forward in the wrong direction.....I like 'em just the way they are.

I'm for and against the stealth launch. It leaves the person hanging with no info to oogle over, but at the same time, it doesn't build up a mountain of hype to live up to. I kind of like the fact that I really don't know a whole lot about the r420.....it's gonna make the next month or two all that more interesting. ;)

nView is fucking rad.

i hope ATI redoes their multimonitor drivers with some more features, ala nView

I think nvidia is going to make a comeback. Not that i dont like ati, but nvidia was putting out awesome cards for generations then all the sudden kinda loitered. I think ati caught them by surprise, (and everyone else) I remember when nvidia bought 3dfx, i thought "oh great, like ati is going to put up a fight" Impressive to come from nearly nothing to king crap of terd island.

Yeah, ATI did surprise everyone all to hell with the 9700Pro way back when.....but I wouldn't count either side out just yet. They've both been working away at a fairly steady pace 'cus they both know that they've gotta get their new hardware to the public in time.

We know that BOTH of them have killer new shit coming, and neither one is really going to be a huge surprise.....it'll just be the final figures that'll impress us the most.

Now that both companies have had their time in the spotlight I really don't think there's going to be a huge upset here either way. It's most likely gonna be a hard fought battle, start to finish. Just the way we want it. ;)
