More networking woes--setting up a wireless access point?

Alright guys, bear with my very amateur explanation of this. So, in an attempt to improve my signal in my house I relocated my router upstairs from downstairs by running a long cable to the modem downstairs, since I have read that the signal travels more efficiently down than up apparently. That has not been the case. Now, I have two routers. A D-link DIR-655 and a Netgear router provided by Comcast which is a WNR-1000v2.

So, if I am reading correctly, or perhaps out of quick desperation, would it be possible to set one of these routers up as a wireless access point? Have a router upstairs be the access point, and have a router downstairs connected to the modem. This sounds like this may be a solution but let me know if I'm completely wrong. In my mind, what I'm after is more of a range extender or a repeater but at this point I don't know the difference anymore. It's been quite stressful dealing with my old man for the past week because he can't use his iPad.

yes, just put the cable into one of the LAN ports on the router and setup a wireless network with the same channel, name and encryption

Awesome, thanks. Although I think I read that the WAP and the main router must have two difference SSIDs and channels?

Bump. So I went through everything and now my whole house is covered and everything can connect to a single network. The only problem I'm having now is that my laptop, which I used to connect and set up the WAP can't connect wirelessly to the network. Any ideas? I tried flushing the DNS, renewing the IP(don't think that worked), restarting the laptop, and rebooting the modem and main router.

EDIT: disregard this post. It was a stupidly simple problem. Needed to remove the network and just connect to it again.
