so many to pick from....I'm loading 300 cd's to my PC...here's the dilema:

What is the best scheme to use? mp3PRO seems attractive, but requires a plugin to take advantage of the code. Portable mp3 players don't support PRO format. That's obviously not a problem for PC based solutions, and I really can't tell the difference from PRO vs. reg mp3 on a PC...the file size is reduced by about 30%, but is that worth the compatibility issue across mp3 players?

Then there is WMA...and regular mp3...

What do y'all think?

Personnaly I use mp3 with LAME encoded and ripped using EAC with --alt-preset extreme (FAQ recommends standard for most people)

The files created work on nearly all mp3 players across all platforms
 
Vorbis isnt a software, its just a format to encode audio files. it takes some space but it has superb quality.. although i personally cant hear a difference between a 320kbps mp3 vs a 240kbps one.
 
FLAC all the way...

lossless is king =]

EDIT: Don't use MP3pro, it's proprietary and has almost no support. Ogg or MP3 are the best bets for portable use, but you can use FLAC on a couple players. AAC is a good choice, and it'll work with an Ipod.

I use FLAC for my HTPC setup (go go lossless), and mp3 --alt-preset extreme for my portable MP3 player.

There's really no other way that has as much compatibility and still sounds quite good (for portable anyway)

I agree. As cool as formats like MPC and Ogg are, the compatibility just isn't there. While I don't own an MP3 player yet, I would like to get one by the end of summer, and having to look for one that supports whatever esoteric format I chose just doesn't appeal to me. I want the player that's the best, not one I have to settle on because I encoded all my files as .xxx .

Of course, with all the music I rip being lossless, this is a moot argument, I can transcode to whatever I want =]

BTW, good to see a fan of Download out there =]
 
If you're looking for quick and easy, just use a simple ripper like Exact Audio Copy and load a 3rd party codec, like the heavily used LAME. This will give you very high quality mp3's that are compatible and don't take up much room.

For those crazy lossless and/or high def audio people out there, there are other options, like .ape or just leaving them all as GIANT .wav files....

There are plenty of how-to's on the net about this stuff.

No, I haven't heard the new SP stuff. In fact, I really haven't heard much of any SP. Big fan of Sidewinder and Effectir though, they are quality albums. I listen more to KMFDM/Pig, Dismantled, Assemblage 23, FLA. The new Front Line Assembly single is pretty good if you haven't heard it, BTW

mp3pro is pointless, AAC is basically the sequel to mp3 pro, uses much of the same technology, sounds better at higher bit rate (>/=160kbps), and has significantly more support.

I use FLAC, LAME 3.96 --alt-preset-standard, MPC (Musepack) and "aotuv" tuned Vorbis.

MAREO is extremely useful for encoding to multiple formats at once (FLAC for archive, mp3 for car, etc.) direct from most CD extractors.
 
Well, I have been using EAC+vorbis for the longest time, but I think I'm going back to LAME, just more compatibility. I've been thinking of FLAC, but haven't actually used it, so I'll have to give it a try, but I'll need a couple of more hard drives if I go that route. And a lot of time to re-encode all my cd's.

Nice to see some industrial fans in here. I'm die hard Skinny Puppy fan as well a Front 242 fan and amny more.
 
FLAC

Rip em only once, and write scripts to transcode to whatever format you need for your player.

FLAC is what you want.

300CDs in FLAC format will require about 120-150GB of storage, but well worth it.
