According to HKEPC, there is a new round of price cuts coming from Intel on July 22nd. The chart shows the quad core Q6600 processors dropping to an amazing $266. If you are like me and planning on building a quad-core system, July can’t get here soon enough. Thanks to GJSNeptune for the linkage.

In the most updated plan, Intel Quad-Core Core 2 Quad Q6600 (2.4GHz/4MB L2 x2/1066MHzFSB) will be further cut to $266, a second drop within 4 months since its release on March with 68.7% accumulated price drop. For the original price segment of Core 2 Quad Q6600, now it will be replaced by a new model Quad Q6700 (2.66GHz/4MB L2 x2/1066MHzFSB), pricing at $530.

"new model quad q6700" ? Is this different than the qx6700 I already have in some way?
Am I missing something?

is this the non "extreme" version? (since it's missing an X) I don't see a spec difference.

Most likely, it has a locked multiplier, unlike the XE CPUs which ususally have an unlocked multi.

Can't wait for the Q6600!! :D

I have never upgraded just my CPU before, it's always been mobo + CPU. But that Q6600, at 2x the max performance of my E6600, is awfully tempting.

How well do these overclock?

Quite well actually. Anywhere from 3.0 to 3.5ghz typically, depending on your chip, cooling, and how far you want to push it.

I just bought an E6420 to hold me over till these price cuts took affect. July 22 can't get here soon enough. It's going to be sweet having 12 - 14ghz on one chip!!!

Thank goodness I saw this. My computer just got struck by lightning this weekend. So I have to build a new one and was thinking about a quad. Now at least I know to just get the cheapest dual core I can find and upgrade in July.

My q6600 is doing 3.0 ghz easily. Has more room, but happy with where it's at.. useing a themalright ultra 120 and a 520 watt psu.

I'm glad I bought it during the last price drop. Waiting 4 months for a $250 price drop wasn't worth it to me.. thats $60 a month "extra" I paid to have my computer 4 months early. I get a lot more than $60 of use out of it..

e4xx0 for the low $100s.

/me's wallet will hate him. But then again, I've been wanting to transition my current box into an HTPC setup (I for one could use a QC rig), and been waiting for cheap quad pricing. This (and the dirt cheap DDR2 prices) just might be the step I need to actually do it. Would be my first Intel build to boot. Hopefully the G81 refresh comes soon too.

Sounds about the right time for me to build my wife a new "work" computer. :)

I am looking forward to the QX6850 coming then :)

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Intel is trying to kill AMD.

This isn't like the P4 Northwood days when Intel kept their prices (comparitively) high and raked in the profits while AMD struggled to keep up with K7.

No, this is much, much worse for AMD. Intel has shown that it's willing to sacrifice margin to hurt AMD.

Intel could easily charge $500 for a quad-core CPU, and they would sell tons of them - AMD doesn't even have a competing product (unless you count the failed 4x4 platform).

No, Intel is playing this very, very well. They know that AMD is short on cash. And they know that if they cut prices AMD will be forced to cut prices as well. AMD cannot afford to cut prices at this point.

AMD is probably going to be bought out in the next 5 years - perhaps by private equity, perhaps by someone like IBM (who AMD already has a longstanding partnership with).

AMD has good technology, but they don't have the financial beef to back it up. They have so many assets (the 2nd best CPU and GPU architectures in the world), and although they have a lot of debt, right now they are looking very cheap to investors. Market price would be 8.5 billion - that's only about 3x what Google paid for YouTube, and YouTube didn't have billions in revenue, some of the leading CPU and GPU architectures on the planet, and two state-of-the-art multibillion-dollar IC fabs.

If the $266 USD 2.4 GHz Quad-core is actually going to materialize, it's definitely going into the machine I'm building at the end of August.

AMD seems....screwed.

IBM isn't buying them.. I am.. :) Actually, nobody is buying AMD, or haven't you noticed?

Oh man, July looks like a time for me to go quad. LoL... My eyes were bulging out of my head when I read about this.

"Welcome to Insane Intel's Caaaaaaazy CPU Lot! I'm Insane Intel here to tell you that all our Q6600 MUST GO! You thought $530 was outrageous? Well I'm goin' even lower folks! Thats right! At prices like $266, how am I not already in an asylum?!"

YES! And the sooner that happens, the better. The market department has been running AMD for far too long now, and calling Hector Ruiz "management" is a joke to say the least. I pray every day that IBM will buy AMD, strip out the good technologies, marry said technologies with their own good stuff, and start producing kickass products again. :) That day will not come soon enough.

:D Indeed ;)
