According to DigiTimes, Intel plans to cut quad-core server CPU prices in July to steal some of the spotlight away from the launch of AMD's upcoming Barcelona series CPUs.

Intel will cut the prices for one-way server Kentsfield processors on July 22 along with price reductions for desktop processors, while two-way server Clovertown processors will see prices slashed at the end of July, the sources said.

I know this article didn't mention it, but the prices on desktop processors will also be dropping, most notably, the Q6600 to, what, 266$? Amazing.

Even if Barcelona/Desktop derivative are amazing, I highly doubt AMD will be able to price them that low. So even if the performance is good, will it be good enough to convince me, and other "enthusiasts" to forgo a $266 quad core? Time will tell. Be interesting to see, for sure.

This is just crazy...

I don't need all that power but it sure makes it very tempting to want to upgrade over and over again.

I'll just wait till the 4th quarter once Vista has the patch out.

That is what's really going to bother AMD. With a new tech, you really want to charge a premium for it and keep ASP up. Intel has had the last year to reap the higher ASP with no new arch from AMD. Now AMD is coming out with what seems to be a very competitive product, and intel just says "oops" and drops the price on a lot of their products. AMD did the same thing for the past year, but remember, whether you like it or not Intel's market position is different. Some people buy trust Intel more. That's a fact. It's changing, but not by much.
