Hey all,

Just started folding with my sig box for [H]. But, I'm interested in expanding on my contribution to f@h. I've got an alien laptop with an i7 than produces a whole 6k ppd! woohoo!

What is the cheapest route to take that will yield the most ppd?

I was thinking cheap amd 6 core / 2500k or dual quad xeons for my next endeavor. Whats the best bang for the buck in the folding department? Thanks!

2600K boxes running -bigadv are pretty good bang. Even better is an SR-2 and hex core xeons if you can get the board and cpus used and cheap.

New, an sr-2 with low-end hex would be around $3,500-4,000, right? +- depending on ram i guess. I've always wanted one of those boards. soooo sexy :p

best bet/bang for buck, would be the dual quad route, can do the 6903/4 that way

Best bang for the buck (PPD/power) would be a Dual/Quad G34 system.
I think we all agree on that?

PS: If you feel like waiting, I should be putting a low-end Dual G34 system for sale soon.
It'll cost under $1K and should produce around 100k+ ppd.

From time to time SR-2 combo's end up in the DC FS/FT for $1200-1500 ready to roll. The most common setup with dual hexes in the 3.5ghz range will net you ~180k ppd on bigbeta units and ~110k ppd on standard bigadv.

Barring that, a 2p G34 would be about the same money but return a lower ppd (~100k) while using less power. The 4p G34's are the real powerhouses and can pull down over 400k, but you are looking at around $2500-$3000 for a 4x dodeca rig even using open box boards and scouring ebay for chips.

I'd be very interested. I'll keep an eye out

I've got 2 quad proc (3ghz xeon 512 / 4mb) dl580 g2's sitting at the office, is it worth the power consumption to fold on those?

Is it similar to the last 2p you sold? Shoot me a pm if so when you're ready to sell, i''m kicking myself for not picking it up.

I started this a while ago on basically this same topic. The prices and production numbers are quite a bit out-of-date, but the general idea holds true. My advise is to first consider your production goal, then build your system or systems around that. You already have some more up-to-date prices and ppd numbers from previous posts. That should give you a good idea of the options.

Of course, this all assumes that you care about the points. There is nothing wrong with folding on anything you may have. We are giving you suggestions on what to run if you want to max out $/ppd or ppd/W. If that doesn't concern you, anything will do.
