Wireless Info has three iPhones in house for testing and claim that 2 of the 3 have problems with battery charging. The good news is that the article does say that Apple is good about replacing the defective phones.

All three iPhones have been left charging for at least 12 hours, so the issue here isn't that they haven't had time to charge; Apple says that the batteries should be fully charged within about 4 hours. What we think is happening is that there is a fault in the phones that means that they aren't getting fully charged; it isn't clear if the battery is a fault, or the charger or the circuitry that controls it.

If it was a user replaceable battery it would be really easy to find out which is at fault.

I am surprised that so many people have yet to realize that Apple is known for keeping there products locked down. OSX never been released into public hands, hardware is very very selective about what you can use, etc.

While the battery replacement is a problem, it truly is the trend with Apple actually, and they are being good about replacements.

The non user replaceable battery is a deliberate design decision by apple to limit the life of the product. The typical rechargeable battery only lasts 2-3 years of normal use. Then they expect you to toss your iphone/ipod in the garbage and buy a newer snazzier model for even more money.

They have decided the bad press for this decision is worth the extra profits of planned obsolescence.

problems with their site? yikes. with the same level of sampling, I think we better declare that all websites are borken!

Ouch. Burn dude...
And that's a fairly bold accusation, Don. Maybe you should just be happy that these aren't the batteries that cause the phone to explode in your pocket, eh?

I think DonDon is right on the money with that one.....

Heh.. last week in the big iPhone thread I was just questioning why they didn't choose to go with a user friendly removable battery. I guess they aim to make the battery last just long enough to outlast their warranty period. Unless you buy a ridiculously priced extended warranty, you are out of luck I would think. Very typical though from such a company.

You would think after the PR debacle over the IPOD battery problem, a few years ago, APPLE would have learned. Do the guys who made that Internet Ipod movie about the battery problem have to produce another movie(this time in HIGH-DEF of course).

Unreal, and to think a company like apple could just release the I-Battery for $50 bucks and it would pretty much sell with every phone they sold...

I guess if you don't learn from history you are bound to repeat it..

That's a great idea. I expect to see that with apple's next product.

The amazing new iPhone 2!!! Only $599 (with a 2 yr agreement, battery not included)

Engadget has just pointed out what Apple's had in their FAQ since the beginning:

the iPhone battery will retain about 80% of it's original charge after 300 to 400 charging cycles.

It also looks like the average user will get one to two days out of a charge.

Posters in the the Engadget thread point out that the decay curve of a Li-on battery is not linear and expect that after 4 years the rate of decay will accellerate quickly.

Looks like the original battery might just last two years after all.

And I've seen alot of smartphone users that, after two years...

surprise, surprise... were more than ready to move on to the latest model - even when the differences weren't that great (from Treo 600 to 700 for example).
