A few new photos of things found around the yard, for the most part...

1) Leaf bug

2) Woolyworm

3) Green fly

4) Fly eyes

5) Horntail wasp

6) Sunset reflections

7) Giant mushroom

I really like Picture #2, Woolyworm. Everything else is not focused, and then you have this little stick of fuzz focused...really neat :)

Camera specs?

So what camera lense?

I am picking up my Canon 20D in about 3 days, unfortuantly any decent macro' lense i want are about $800 + :(

i loved my Canon Rebel to death! (sold it while i could get some money)

Thanks for the compliments! :)

The camera, detailed here is from work; I am fortunate to be able to use it more or less freely. It's a Fuji S2 Pro (based on the Nikon N90, I believe). The first few were taken with a Sigma 150mm macro lens, the sunset with a Nikon 18-35mm, and the last with (my favorite) a Sigma 50mm macro.

I would highly recommend Sigma macro lenses, as I have had excellent experiences with the two I've used, but I have heard that Sigmas are rather hit-or-miss in terms of sharpness. The 50mm, at under $250, is an excellent buy, though. Granted, 50mm is a bit short for macro work with animate subjects, but it has given me great results. See my previous recommendation, with samples, in this thread.

Thanks for the words, i want to spend some good money on thie Canon 20D - i prefer Canon, have tried sony and minolta and didnt like either, Nikon i havent tried yet but i am hooked on the Canon 20D

what were the original resoluitions of those pics? i assume highest quality?

Well, one very annoying thing about the S2 is that its sensor is actually oriented at 45º to a normal up-down-left-right sensor. So you can shoot at 12MP, but it's essentially just interpolating to achieve that resolution. You lose sharpness and just have to scale it back down anyway. The raw mode only functions at 12MP, but I rarely have time to deal with it. There's a JPEG 12MP mode, but the increase in pixels isn't worth the loss of sharpness. It's really time to upgrade to an S3 or a D2X or something. :D

You'd like the D2X, thats for sure :D

Why such a wide aperature for this set?

I used a wide aperture because I was getting bored with small-aperture shots; it seemed like every photo was starting to look the same. It's frustrating trying to focus accurately with such a wide aperture, but it's nice to try something different every once in a while.

I thought that might be the case . I notice many of them are manually exposed as well.

The only macro shot I've taken at a wide aperature that came out was this one:

1/180", f/4

The DOF is only two dew drops wide :p

Beautiful shot! I like the effect of the line of droplets. It's tough to get right (obvious tip: shoot in continuous mode and pray that one of them comes out right), but it's great when you can get a sharp line of focus across an image. I've tried a couple of times before:

Wow i think those are all some really nice pics.
I am just starting out in photo. Just got my first digital about a month ago.
Nikon coolpix 5900.
Hopefully that wasn't a dumb buy, i was told Nikon is a great brand.

Maybe i'll have something cool to post up here someday

To the poster wanting macro:

Check out extension tubes! They are no optical elements, so it wont degrade your image quality. A set is around $100, buy a set of Kenko and you'll be shooting awesome macros!

underwater kit huh...hmmm
i think i'll work on getting something on dry land first...

I now have my Canon 20D and love it, battery grip, 2 batteries and i got the Canon UltraSonic EFS 17-85mm Lens to start (hefty price tag) - total was $3500 Canadian with taxes (almost $500 in taxes)

i havent really take many pics yet - was messing around, this certainly isn't a macro lens, but working with what i got. Havent had my Rebel for about 5 months so almost forgot how to use this camera :(

original res is 3504 x 2336 - jpeg highest (i love this cam as you can shoot RAW + JPG and it saves both)

Camera has a nice heavy / solid feel to it which is nice.

i didn have many objects to take pics of last 2 days yet, wait till i get back to costa rica.

Nice shots HorsePunchKid. Sorry, but that fly image by PS-RagE is my favorite though.
Great lighting and focus. You can see each individual hair on that little bugger.

okay PS-RagE , what camera, what lens :D

That shot was taken with a Nikon D2X, a Sigma 180mm F/3.5 macro and a SB800 on a flash bracket.

The trick, especially handheld, is to use flash and get it out over the end of the lens:

That is not the flash bracket I would normally use with that lens (the other one is shorter) but you get the idea. I use a diffuser on the flash to soften the shadows. This one came with the flash but is identical to a Stoffen
