Monster MX300 ( AU8830a2 ) problem

Got a friend with a Diamond Multimedia Monster MX300 ( AU8830a2 ) sound card who has a problem with audio dropping out in XP. Audio generally works for a few minutes from startup but then cuts out, returning only upon restart. I've seen references to problems with these cards on VIA boards (and this is in a VIA board) but haven't been able to ferret out a fix as many links related to the issue seem to be dead or circular. The only info I found here was http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=761585 but that seems to suffer from dead links as well.

Anyone else here know what the fix was? Or a driver that doesn't have this problem? Sound works fine from the onboard audio if enabled, though it's a bit rough by comparison.
 
Isn't that card ancient? I thought Diamond got out of the soundcard/graphics card business 4-5 years ago.

That's what I told them (1998 is printed on the card). It's funny, I haven't had dealings with their computer before but apparently they bought it as a good "deal" on NZ$4500 worth of PC for some undisclosed lower sum, and it is quite obviously just a cobbled together mule from parts some shop had kicking around. Sad as well but don't want to disillusion them as they are happy with the thing and happiness is worth more than money, hopefully they won't get burned next time around. I'll have a look at those drivers but I think that they should be able to live with onboard sound through an average sound system hanging off the end of some decidedly ghetto wiring.
 
Actually, the MX300 was a good card for its time. Its A3D 2.0 support still makes it desirable to some people. The day Aureal/A3D died was a sad one.
 
Still haven't found any hard info on the VIA issue, just left them hooked up to onboard but if I can get some more info I'll have another crack at it (the alternate drivers didn't fix the cut-out problem).
 
I don't believe there's any 'hard info,' actually. Back in the Aureal days, VIA was the scapegoat for a great many issues involving soundcards, videocards, capture cards, IDE controllers, etc. While some things were VIA's fault, it got to the point where objectivity was clearly lost.

You can get to the bottom of this issue for your friend by updating the latest chipset driver suite for your friend's chipset, and observing the audio performance after the change.
