Hi, my Cambridge Soundworks Desktop Theater 5.1 has a S/PDIF port on the back. It supports Dolby Digital 5.1 but you need it hooked up with the cable. I was looking at

I am pretty sure I can use that cable because it says "Allows enjoyment of movies with Dolby Digital® and DTS® surround sound." but I just wanted to make sure. Aslong as that cable will handle the Dolby Digital channels It can use the DD5.1.

Fuck monster cable. Go get a cable at radio shack for $2. There will be absolutely no difference in performance. ThoughiIf you would still like to spend that much money then feel free to send me the money and I will gladly send you a cable.
 
I somewhat agree with the "f*ck monster cable" remark.. but when it comes to coaxial SPDIF cables, quality DOES matter. Buy a heavilly insulated cable so there's little to no EM interference and you get the strongest signal integrity for the best possible sound. Acoustic Research makes some very good interconnects for the money.
 
It's a digital signal. The data is either there or it's not there. If the cable lets in too much noise and the decoder can't make sense of it then the audio will just cut out. In that case get a new cable. If you are getting sound and it is not cutting out then you are getting the best quality sound you can get with a digital interconnect. Right now I am using one of those RCA cables that come in a 4-pack at radio shack. I've never noticed any problems with it. If you would like to send me a more expensive cable then I would gladly compare the two. When it comes to analog cables, quality definately does matter. Any noise introduced into an analog signal becomes part of the audio.
 
While that Monster cable is not exactly what I would call a high quality cable it will offer you much better performance then a garbage 2$ radio shack cable.

I would suggest you search around a little more cause you can find much better cables for less money.
Try Searching for Zu on ebay and see what pops out. ;)
 
How exactly is a monster cable going to offer better performance than a $2 radio shack cable in this situation? Is the monster cable specially lubricated to allow the data to flow more smoothly? Is my cheap cable introducing rogue audio data into the bitstream that I don't know about? Would you care to justify your 'much better performance' claim?
 
I do not need to rationalize something I have heard with my own two ears.

I would really appreciate it if you gave me a bit of insight into this matter. Just a couple reasons why more a more expensive cable will provide 'much better performance'. I'm tired of being ignorant. :( If this is thread crapping then I'll just start a new thread or I can PM you.
 
go make your own cable. if you can assemble a PC, you can make coax audio cable. All it takes is a sharp knife, a steady hand, and patience. You could build a cable thats far superior for monster for 1/3rd the price.

Given the argumentative nature of the replies you have posted in this thread, I don't see how that will be a good use of my time or effort especialy when I have already made my point.
 
when using analog, the cable makes a difference. But i don't see it that way when it comes to digital.
 
In digital, you ahve TOSlink (oiptical) and coax digital.

For Coax digitl you still need to worry about noise being introduced into the line...given digital has higher noise rejection , far higher than analog, but if you get the right amount of noise, it might make the DAC get screwy and you could see that as jitter noise.

For TOSlink, you have to worry about the quality of the cable. Scratched or damaged optical elements can screw up the data transmission as well. Really, though AR is about as high priced as I would go for TOSlink....I prefer COAX digital anyways, and use that myself with ym onkyo GX-D90 speaker set that I often use with my PC.
