Question, and sorry if this is kind of dumb or silly: what's the difference in functionality? Sure, it's different ports, but now a days most cards come with an HDMI and displayport can be easily adapted to HDMI. I have 2 tvs I use a displays for my setup. Are there any more benefits of a monitor?
 
Depends on your useage and what you're after. With TVs, you have to be more careful and do your homework if you care about things like 4:4:4 support (text clarity), input lag, and image quality (most TVs have a 'torch mode' and more than a few folks are silly enough to use them). Some can have irksome features like non-defeatable auto-dimming, hidden 'under the hood' saturation boosts for TV game modes, ect. Most TVs are glossy these days, which may be a pro or con.

I had success with an old LG 32", but when it died I wasn't able to find a satisfying successor. I went with a 34" monitor and felt much better off for it. That said, if the TV meets your needs, then it's just fine and a good alternative. I believe certain Sony models have 4:4:4 support and also quite good input lag and get good marks for image quality.
