i have a few main offices and a BUNCH of satellite offices... it'd be nice to set something up at these locations that notifies me if the connection goes down

assume the sat offices have either an untangle box (at the bigger ones) or dd-wrt routers at the smaller locations

having a sort of "status" page where i can check the IPs of the locations and when it was last up (if it went down) would be fabulous... having something that'd text me in the event of an outage would be fantastic....

i would like to know when "the internet is down" before the people that call me do...

what's my best route?

Any monitoring system should do. Nagios is good, Zenoss is supposed to be too, but I've never used it. Both are free.

solarwinds orion if you can afford it.

If not, Vito's suggestions are the norm. That and Cacti.
