monitor won't wake from sleep

Never had this issue but had it now twice in the past few days.
Computer is running, I have the monitor set to sleep after 5 minutes.

The monitor will not wake forcing a reset.

Nothing in the event viewer as to why.
It said the system shut down many hours before when it was working yet and all my tabs/etc were still there
so that can't be true.
The only odd thing, 15 seconds before this supposed shutdown google updater ran.

Monitor works fine, GPU is 6+ years old but works fine.
DVI cable is fairly new.

A quick search around the net shows this can be a fairly common issue.
Did not find any suggestions on a root cause though.

Did you try unplugging the DVI cable and re-installing it, might get you back in your session.
 
I did, the monitor would turn on then go right so sleep, no desktop present.

Strange, can't say I've had this happen in well over a decade then 2 in a few days.
