Okay here's the situation. I have a Hitachi CM721F 19" monitor. I was previously using a leadtek gfti4400, on which any refresh rate besides 60hrz or 100hrz would cause image jitter. I lived with this as 100hrz is great. I recently upgraded to a sapphire 9800pro, and now only 60hrz is a stable refresh rate, all others including 100hrz cause image jittering. I thought maybe it was the 120mm vantec stealth side blowhole causing EMI, but i disabled the fan and the image still jitters unless the monitor is at 60hrz.

Can anyone help me? 60hrz is far too low my eyes are starting to bleed. :(

P.S.- Tried both ATI Cat 3.10's and Omega 3.10's, image jitter problem exists with both. I'm running a p4 1.8a on an Abit IT7, agp is set to 66, enermax 350watt psu (not the cause, system is no where near needing psu upgrade).

Ideas?
 
Well if you think it's EMI (sounds logical) I'm not sure you could do anything except find and remove the EMI or try to add shielding to the VGA cable.
 
It could be environmental.
Have you tried moving the machine elsewhere?
Just take it to anther room or something. Rotating the monitor might also help... or make it worse. Worked for my brother.
 
could be a cheap video cable, try borrowing a different one.

also make sure the video cable is not crossing close to any power cables or near any power adapters or flourecent lights.
 
Seems to me like it could be the monitor. Mine does all sorts of weird stuff, one of which is that at 800x600@60Hz or 640x480@60Hz (what some older games positively insist on using and won't let you change) my monitor makes a high pitched sound that is so painful I can have a headache for the rest of the day if I play more than a few minutes at a time. If I use ANY other refresh rate inside the correct range, there is no problem whatsoever. Personally, I think you should find another computer and plug the monitor into it and test. If the problem occurs there too you have proof positive probably.
 
hmmm. I found a small point in the monitor cable which had been ruptured, though minorly, and not any deeper then the rubber on the outside. I tried repairing it as best I could (cable is hardwired into the monitor) and I moved the cabling away from my ups as far as possible, but no go, still lots of jitter. Really I'd be fine if I could just not have jitter at 100hrz again like my gf4 ti4400...what would cause jitter on the radeon and no jitter on the gf4 when run @ 100hrz? Neither jitter @ 60hrz, but both jitter at everything else (besides 60 or 60/100).
 
Electro Magnetic Interference, trust me, I have a conduit behind my wall, it drives me nuts. 100% sure its EMI, move the thing thats emitting EMI.
 
yeah i suppose i'll completely redo the wiring in here next chance i get, move my ups as far as i can away from everything (while still being, you know, usable) and see where that gets me. thanks for the help.

btw, i've gotta be the oldest cheeze on this board :p four years is a lot of lurking (had an account in '99, but it died when the isp it was attached to died and i forgot the password :rolleyes: ).
 
I changed from a GF to an ATI 9500 Pro, had the 'locked' 60Hz nasty, plus screen shimmering. The only way I could force the refresh to what I wanted (85Hz @1280x1024) was to grab Powerstrip 3.4. Not only does this nice proggie allow setting to the proper refresh rate, it fixed my shimmering display too. Other usefull features include setting different clock speeds for specific games/apps etc, which return to default speeds when going back the desktop. Note# I never had the problem with nVidia cards, this is a common (but curable) problem on some ATi cards, in certain configurations. Although the shimmering problem I had 'looked' like EMI, it was not.

Interesting, do you happen to remember which settings you changed that fixed your issues?
 
I'm using the newest powerstrip now, and I can tell this will definitely work, though it's having some issues maintaining my forced settings while gaming (even with application profiles). It also sometimes doesn't set my custom settings when returning from a game. Thanks for the suggestion though, I'll keep messing with it until i get it right. If anyone has some specific settings that seem to help this issue, please let me know. :)
 
Did you try using the radeons other output? you need a dvi adapter, they usually come with one.
 
Also kind of weird, but powerstrip only sometimes allows me to go into the advanced timing section? It seems to be completely random, restarting powerstrip/comp sometimes fixes it but not always.
