So I have these 2 Viewsonic 21" P810's here. The wife says I can buy 2 19" widescreen LCDs (holding out for the Dell whatever's) if I can sell these to cover at least one of them.

The goal is to sell them both for enough to cover the cost of 1 1/2 of the LCDs.

So, in order to sell them for a lisghtly higher price, I was gonna mod them.

Both monitors work perfectly well, they just take up waaay too much space on my desk, and are a bear to take to LANs.

So, the modding begins.

So far, the list is this:

  • Cut a large window into the top for a window. No fans or vents, just solid window.
  • Cut a 80mm (or 120mm if I can) hole in each side for fans for cross-flow ventilation.
  • Install LED fans.
  • Wrap all visible wiring with split loom of the same color.
  • Possibly install CCFLs, or LED meteor lights.
  • Mod a card reader into the front bezel.
  • Mod a USB hub into the front bezel.
  • Swap out the green/yellow LED for a blue/something LED.
  • paint the bezel from beige to black or 2-tone black/something.
  • All 12V items will be powered off of soemthing 12V inside, or have a seperate power jack just for that purpose.

So what else can you guys think of? It's gotta be something with a purpose, or to make it look better than it does now.

I will be modding both monitors identically, except mayeb 1 will be blue and the other will be red, or something similar.

Ive also heard rumors that the shock from the monitor has killed or seriously injured people :confused:

Wow, certainly an interesting idea.

However, I think some potential buyers would be turned off by having a modified monitor; how would they know for sure that you haven't mucked something up inside?

Cause he knows what he's doing. If you'd seen his other mods you'd have faith :p

As for the modlist... I like all the ideas except for the fans. Are they necessary? Wouldn't it just be added noise?
 
Heh not too much excitement for CRT's these days i suppose, but there are definately those who still love em, I'd personally say as long as it's got a great paint job (black) and blue or red led's I'd be happy. Adding a window with some subtle lighting effects would be even better.
 
i think that you are headed in the right direction with what you want to do. The USB hub will be the best part IMO. I know that its the one of the greatest features of the new Dell monitors.

Unless you find a buyer that wants your CRTs built exactly the way you are doing them, you probably will not make that much money. It might not even be worth modding, because of the costs from all those mods.

If I were you, I would find someone that wants 2 modded CRTS and mod them exactly to their specs. CRTs and LCDs are worthless to mod, unless it is just for looks... Fans, windows, etc seem like a dumb idea because the inside of CRTs are usually fugly. Painting it black sounds cool though, I have also done that for looks :D

Added noise? Yes, but not the kind you're thinking. Fans are inductive, and therefore create interference, which IIRC messed with the monitor that TwistedMods used for their monitor modding tutorial. When the fan was on, it was like having a badly shielded monitor cable.
 
AC fans will mess with a monitor. DC fans are perfectly fine.

I learned that back in my first year of Vo-Tech electronics class.

By the way, I have 2 more 21" monitors here with 80mm fans strapped to the backs.
 
lol, I was halfway through the thread before I realized it was your project sarver. Does this mean you will no longer lan on the wife's 15" monitor? How about adding an LCD screen like used in case mods to the front of one (borh?) monitors to display things such as what media is playing or some such.
 
Good idea.

I think I might just mod a 3.5" opening into the front, then the person can install whatever they want.

yeah ive been sent back a few times on monitors. hurts like a sonofabitch
