Hey all, I didn't know if I should put this here or in the computers / modding section but it has more to do with displays so I'll place it here for now.

Anywho, I've noticed that I've got this 15inch FP5315 compaq LCD monitor laying around with some missing hardware so I figured wth, I might as well mod something I've thought about doing for a while...you may have guess it...mounting an LCD panel into the side panel of a computer tower. (yes, I realize this could increase my overall case temp..frankly I don't care :-P this is more for fun since I also have a case I'm not using)

Now, I've ripped this sucker apart and it looks fairly simple with the LCD panel, Controller card, power / inverter board, and the board with the menu controls. The problem, however, is that the inverter / power board is a quite a bit larger than I can use.

Upon closer inspection..and tracing the circuitry I know that there is a 15V and a 5V link between the controller card and power board, so I should beable to modify the computer PSU wiring to output the voltage for that. Though..I'm not sure of the voltage being sent to the LCD monitors CCFLs for the backlighting. I tried throwing a multimeter to the pins when the monitor is on, but seems to cut the voltage altogether...and since it cuts the voltage so fast I can't get a reliable/steady reading on my meter to know for sure.

Does anyone have any idea who I could go about doing this..or have any idea what voltages I could be dealing with?
 
Were you trying to measure the voltage going directly to the CCFL bulbs? I think it's around 300V, AC. An inverter is required.

Thanks for the reply. I kinda figured it was some pretty high AC voltage since the CCFL lights in my case run off an inverter that spits out like 350V (don't quote me exactly on that..it's been a while since I measured it)

Though...I do find it somewhat strange that when I try to test the voltage from the board with my meter the power stops going to the LCD panel. I guess i'm not quite sure as to why it does that..unless it runs on a kind of latching circuit that is interrupted the sudden drop in voltage going to the CCFLs...though I find that somewhat hard to believe since the only other connection to the panel are 2 ribbon cables going directly into the controller card (which I assume is for the video translation)

Eh...maybe I'll measure the voltage output from the CCFL inverter in my other case..and if it seems acceptable, try hooking it up to the LCD panel and see if they're compatible. Sound reasonable?
 
You need to use high impedance leads and a meter that can read from them.
An oscilloscope will do the job.
 
Well, hot wiring the LCD CCFLs to the inverter used for the old black light CCFLs in my case did the trick..though I should mention that the output from both the inverter and the monitor's old power board were much greater than 300VAC..to high for my meter to read infact ;-)

yes, I agree. An oscilloscope would be a great way to go if I had access to one.

Now all there is left to do in this mod is to get a case to chop up, wire the controller card & LCD panel to a power supply, and mount it all. I can make a tutorial for this mod if anyone is interested.
