Monitor is rainbow coloured...

I have an NEC MultiSync FP912SB montior, that for about a year and a half has been working absolutely amazingly. This past week though, it has become quite odd. At first, it had been quite a bit darker than it should have been, forcing me to go into the SuperBright mode, as well as losing DDC capabilites (naviSet doesn't work). After that, I noticed the screen was slightly reddish, which after a few days became slightly bluish. Yesterday the colours had fixed themselves, but the monitor was still dark.

This morning, once upon going on to my PC, I was welcomed with a very rainbow looking monitor... There is a HUGE red splotch in the middle, and the right side is green, and the extreme left is a bit blue. Obviously degaussing didn't work, and the only electrical deivces near my PC, which are real tiny anyways, even when moved didn't do anything. I also unplugged it, moved it to the other side of my dorm room for two hours and let it sit cold before plugging it back in, but I still get this funky colour thing.

One other thing to note is that the changes in the colours and stuff always happened while the monitor was off for long periods of time, most notably when i was sleeping. I know I could send it in for repair, but being a university student with no vehicale, this would be a little hard to do.

Any help would be appreciated.

*EDIT* - with careful observation, at the exact moment I hit the degauss function, the screen is crystal clear, then fades into a reddish tint while the monitor is refocussing, then once it is fully focussed, and does that final "click", it hits the rainbow effect magically...

sounds like you have some magnetic interference near your monitor. move it away from the wall, and away from any speakers or tvs, etc.

hmm, just for the heck of it, i unplugged it for 20 min agian, and now works okayish again... despite the fact it didn't fix itself in the 2 hours i left it alone... the only problem left now is that is is darker than it should be, and NaviSet doesn't detect it.

kinda sounds like ye old guns are goin.. although i havent noticed that happening much with crt monitors more with huge ass crt tvs but whatever... ive got a dell (trinitron) monitor thats starting to get real dark after about 5 years of use (brightness and contrast all the way up so that i can actually see anything)...

did you try the seeing if you've got magnetic problems like that dude up there suggested? i doubt that would be your problem as it sounds like you're monitor is on the way out...
