Came back from holiday a couple of days ago to find that my aging LG L204WT would no longer turn on, so I'm in the market for a new monitor.
My computer is a Hackintosh built 9 months ago, which I use for Gaming (Win 10) and general computing / programming (OS X). I'm not a hardcore gamer, but I play a wide spectrum of games like RPGs, Batman Arkham games, the odd FPSs and others. I use a Gigabyte GTX 970 Gaming G1 in the machine.
Initially I picked up a Samsung S22D300 for €109 as a temporary solution while I decided on what monitor to get, but it was quickly returned as it was horrible if seen even a little off the vertical angle.
I'm unsure about whether to try IPS again or not, I went through a bunch of 24" Apple Cinema Displays back in 2009. They either had bad backlight bleed or dead pixels. I see from threads on panels like Dell's U2515H and others that backlight bleed can still often be a problem but I also see that IPS has become much more commonplace than before.
I'm also torn between getting one or two monitors. I prefer the idea of one (I'm realistic enough that if I had two, I'd be annoyed that the one I want for gaming won't be centered directly ahead of me), but can see the advantages of two, particularly if one of they has a pivot mode. I seems a bit more sensible to me, that a 21:9 monitor might be a better fit as I gain additional space without needing another monitor.
I've not see a game played on a 144mhz monitor, or a monitor that supports G-Sync, so I have no idea how good they will be, or if they are worth spending the additional money on them.
Considerations at the moment
Dell U2515H
LG 24GM77 (nearby store has one left, and I read online it's now discontinued)
A 21:9 monitor of some type like the LG 29UM65-P
Not considering after seeing them in store:
Samsung S24D390 - screen looked nice, but I really didn't like the base
ACER XB280HK - I thought it might be a great solution, but the one in store didn't seem to have uniform lighting and while colors looked great left to right, they shifted too much for my taste when I moved a little up and down.
Asus VG248QE - between here & another forum the consensus seemed to be that the 24GM77 was the better choice compared to this. Plus I've read a few reports of people getting headaches from this monitor.
Acer X34 - I love the look of it, but the missus has said NO based on the price
So yeah, I'd be grateful for any thoughts. I've spent a lot of time going square eyed looking at the ipad researching screens, and a few hours looking at screens in two different stores. (Which between the store lights and the screens I came away with a headache). I'm more than a little overwhelmed and from the look of announcements (and stock levels in one of the shops) now doesn't seem to be the best time to be hunting for a new monitor.
