I have an NEC MultiSync FE771SB 17" crt monitor hooked up to an evga 7800gt with a vga to dvi adapter. I cant touch the screen without getting an electrical shock. I've checked my hardware and everything is hooked up fine. I've had it for 2 years but since getting the 7800gt I get static electricity shocks everytime I try to touch the screen. What could be causing this?

thanks in advance

if u have carpet in your room then there is static electricity there and it will build up until you touch something metal. the 7800 thing is probably a coincidence.

ya I really hope so

I do have a carpet and will try taking it out on the weekend to see if that makes a difference

Just touch something metal before you touch your CRT.

:p

that's not good enough ..today my pregnant wife touched the screen and the power button while turning on my pc ..she got a nasty shock and she ended up going to the emergency room on the advise of Telehealth (a free medical healthline in canada) ..she's fine and so is the baby but we were pretty scared. I also have a 2 year old son and the shock is fairly painful so I dont want him touching it either

Perhaps something inside the monitor isn't properly grounded. What about taking a multimeter to it and see if there is a constant voltage running through it. Attach one lead to something grounded, maybe the computer case, and touch the other lead to various points on the monitor. I'm not sure it would work but if you do see a constant voltage, something is definitely wrong with the monitor.

I recommend either PM'ing a mod to have this thread moved, or just start up a new thread in our psu forum, where this type of situation is sometimes adressed.

Give em all the details leading up to the first shock, eg; swapping video cards, whether you have proper 3-prong grounding on the tower and monitor, etc etc etc ;)

I highly suspect that it isn't static electricity (which i'm sure you're beginning to also).

G'luck
