I would like to get some recommendations for a monitor that I can use for programming, school work and lots of surfing with minimal eye strain. I am looking for a triple or dual setup of either 19" 4:3 (1280x1024) or bigger with low res and high dot pitch. I already have three 2209wa's on order with dell but it probably won't get here till August. I am beginning to doubt whether I would like that setup either due to the panels themselves or just having three wide screen monitors being too much.

So what are you guys with sensitive eyes and long computer hours using?

I'd consider getting 1 30" LCD, maybe something like a the 3007WFP.

I highly recommend anything that can rotate to portrait. Portrait is a godsend for coding. Unfortunately, that effectively limits you to IPS or *VA panels. Even if you find a TN that can rotate, avoid it - they look *terrible* rotated.

3 widescreen absolutely isn't too much. I'm running 3 24" and its spectacular to code on. I completely disagree with the above's recommendation of a single 30", having the space for several fullscreen windows (code, documentation, etc..) is ideal for dev work.

I use a 30" to code but I probably would have preferred 3x24" in portrait mode just so that I do not have to adjust the windows around.

30 with tiling manager is good, makes it easy to use full screen, or with windows 'gridmove', very helpful. But yeah 2 24s in portrait is pretty darn nice.

I use 3x 23" in portrait. It's a godsend going from one in landscape to three in portrait for my programming class. No more minimizing and switching between multple ssh windows.

I'm using NEC EA231WMi's. I got mine from Dell. Don't forget to use 10% bing cash back while you still can!!!

I actually use a NEC 2490WUXi2 in the normal mode with a 20wmgx2 in portrait. It makes it really easy to code/do multimedia stuff at the same time. If I were you and I were set on a triple monitor setup I'd consider a larger middle monitor with 2 smaller sides. You could probably get a U2410 and 2 20" sides for well within the cost of three 2209's and you'd have more pixel space as well.
