Ok here's the thing, my brother is an aspiring photographer and I have heard complaints about poor colours/colour accuracy and generally crap picture on his cheap LG LCD monitor. So I've come here to ask you guys about a decent monitor for this purpose. Budget would be around £200 roughly, but could possibly be increased if there is a good reason.

Brings up the Dell 2209WA at the top. How's that? Is the 1680 x 1050 resolution going to be an issue coming from a 1920 x 1080?

Probably, but you bro has a pretty low budget. A display that gives consistent colors with an IPS panel costs about twice as much as a display with a cheap, shitty TN panel. So to fit within the budget, you'll end up with a smaller display with fewer pixels...but at least the colors will be consistent.

If your bro's not doing pro level work it'll be fine for him while he's still learning. Once he starts making money as a photographer, that's when he should buy a $1300 USD display that is 30 inches diagonal with 2560x1600 pixels.

Looks like it's going to be the 2209WA.

Are there any alternatives?

Potentially the U2311h, but it's a bit of a gamble with quality control. You may have to send it back. A lot.

Doesn't sound promising. Anyone willing to give me a shove toward the 2209? :D

read some reviews instead of asking of some random people's opinions

Nah I think he should do both. Some people have taken the time to go through all there is to find out about these monitors and would be able to give an overview of what they've seen.

And to my knowledge there's not a single professional review on the U2311h that mentions the tinting issue these monitors all seem to have. Either the units have been hand-selected by Dell, or the reviewers have gotten pretty lucky. In any case, if the OP had stuck to googling for reviews, he would've missed this. Just saying.

I just bought a pair of these to replace some Samsung TN panels. I also bought a Sypder3 calibrator... the end result is pretty awesome. I've quite happy with my purchase.

Thanks guys

Any views on this? http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2311h.htm

Looks pretty good from what I can see, but I have very limited experience with monitors
