Monitor display shakes erratically

I've had an NEC FE991SB monitor now for a couple years and recently my monitor's display has started shaking erratically at random times. It's not the "shaking" that occurs when the refresh rate is set to low, but a much more noticeable "shake" on a slightly larger scale and completely random (no where near as big as degauss). It only lasts a few seconds and happens quite frequently, although sometimes it'll go a few hours without doing it. It's not a driver issue either, the same thing happens whether I'm in Linux or Windows XP. I currently have my resolution set to 1600x1200 @ 72 Hz and have tried going down to 1280x1024 @ 85 Hz and it still does it. I don't have any thing near my monitor that would interfere either. Any ideas?

It could be a power issue. I've seen that a few times. For example, the compressor in the fridge kicks on and the screen goes a bit whacky. Generally speaking this means whatever piece of equipment is causing it is having issues and isn't operating properly since it's dumping all kinds of EMI into the AC line.
My neighbot at a previous job had a space heater that did this. Whenever it was running my screens would go berzerk. She used a laptop & didn't even notice. My brother also had a similar problem once. He figured out it was either power or something near the computer that was causing it, as moving it to a different room cured the problem. He moved a few months later & didn't have any more trouble after that.
I'd start by moving the computer just to see if that helps. If it does you might try a UPS or some sort of power filter. If you really want to be a geek, tossing a couple ferrite beads on the power cables to the computer & monitor might also help.
Of course, it could also be that the monitor's malfunctioning, in which case all you can really do is send it in for repairs or get a new one.

It appears to be getting worse now and happens more frequently. Now occasionally the top and bottom of my screen will randomly shrink and expand, it's strange. I'm not sure if it's an interference problem either, when it starts shaking I hit the side of my monitor it fixes itself for 10 - 20 seconds or so. Does it still sounds like it could be interference?

Thanks for the replies guys. I guess I'll wait until it officially dies and order an LCD.

yup......I had a KDS 17" do the same thing. now i'm on an L90D+ :D

sounds like a monitor siesure. get her to the hospital STAT or she may flatline.

Make sure you don't have a cell phone nearby. My GSM phone occasionally transmits or receives something (probably just saying "I'm still here" and the tower responding) and when that happens, it makes the picture on my CRT shake or distort for a few seconds. This happens if the phone is within about 3 feet of the monitor. The monitor will go seriously nuts about 5 seconds before my phone rings, which is kind of weird because it lets me know it'll ring before it does. Of course, this also makes me wonder every time I hear about how cell phones don't really produce any harmful radiation and holding them next to your head is just fine :D
