Monitor Calibrator - Suggestions

So I bought a used LCD2490 monitor and feel the colors are bit more different from mbp 13". I don't say the colors are off because none of the devices are calibrated. I want to make sure both are in same color as I do loads of photography editing. I do not print photos on paper but share it online and color accuracy is important.

Which of the calibrators do you folks suggest?

- X-rite colormunki
- Spyder 3 pro
- spyder 4 express
- X-rite i1 display 2

Budget is less than $150.
Due to overall suggestions of Huey not being consistent I have not considered that here.

Any ideas and suggestions are welcome.

I'd suggest the following combo:

1) used X-Rite i1 Display 2 calibration device: ~$45

2) SpectraView II software package from NEC: ~$100

3) Total Cost: ~$145

Reason? The SpectraView II software works with the i1/i2 series, and allows you to do hardware calibration on your NEC LCD2490WUXi. Buying a new SpectraView II package (software/hardware) will set you back anywhere from $200-$300, depending on the revision.

Here's a nice example of what can be done with SpectraView II on your monitor: SpectraView II used with LCD2490WUXi

Best of luck in your monitor calibrator hunt! :)

That's a great idea tungt88, I will definitely explore more on this. I have few questions here:

- i1 display can be from GretagMacbeth or only X-rite? (at ebay)
- Any restriction how old they can be? I dont know if colorimeter sensors lose capacity over time.
- This SVII and i1D2 works on mbp as well. Are these two combination limited to NEC products alone or they work other montiors too?

Thanks for the wishes, I want to finish this off ASAP.

The i1d2 isn't accurate compared to the i1 display pro, if you are actually serious about getting good results get the i1 display pro or spyder 4 elite

Thanks, how about the X-rite colormunki display? I think it's a spectrophotometer, will it be a good combination to use with the stock software for any screens like CCFL or LED..etc?

Budget right now is $150, I wont be printing on paper but want to make sure the colors look appropriate on the monitor.

What NCX said is technically accurate, but there is no way you can get a i1 Display Pro for less than $200 unless you get really really lucky (and the NEC package, which includes the i1 Display 2 + SpectraView II = $300!). Yes, the ColorMunki does work w/SpectraView II; if you can find it for a decent price, it's worth a shot ...

FYI, X-Rite bought out GretagMacbeth in 2006 and Pantone in 2007, I believe, don't remember exactly when. And 2 years for age is what I'd go by. The SVII package is for NEC products ONLY; it's exclusive for NEC. Hope this helps!

Oops, screw-up on my part. ColorMunki is no longer supported by SVII it seems! I just looked it up, so sadly, you're out of luck on that ...

Thanks for the details, tungt88, appreciate it.

I'm looking at used i1 Display 2 and would buy SV II for nec. Let's see how it goes.

For the colormunki, NEC website says the below calibrator is supported by SVII:

• X-Rite ColorMunki

Reference here.

Yes, I saw that too, then checked online and saw sources that claimed ColorMunki no longer worked with SVII ... rechecked again, and now it seems that they misread some issue that ColorMunki had with SVII and reinterpreted that as: "ColorMunki doesn't work with SVII". Here is the link to a PDF that answers that question.

If you have any more questions about SVII or the i1 Display series, you might want to PM Art Marshall -- he's the NEC Display Product Manager on this forum: check here His post is #4 on that thread. If you have a question about NEC display stuff, he's your man :D

I use the Spyder 4 Elite and love it, I have used the Spyder 2 and the X-Rite and prefer the Spyder.

I use the i1D2 in combination with X-Rite's Eye-Match 3 software. Seems to work pretty well. TFTCentral.co.uk did a review of it as well with very good results.

Do general computer, ma-pa shops calibrate monitors for a fee? If so, can they do it on their machines - can a monitor generally be calibrate on one pc and still be nicely calibrated on another or is it PC/video card depedent?

Calibration has to be done for every display/videocard configuration, yes.

with a budget of $300, calibrating a projector, macbook retina and some 27"
which would you guys recommend?

I went with a spyder; and was amazed at the color cast of my asus; never noticed it before. Made a *huge* difference getting two different makes of monitor to match. Your laptop display will never be *just* right as color shifts based off viewing angles; but you can be sure it's close at least.
