Monitor calibration

Up until now, I've done just the basic monitor setup and tweaking using the Windows config tool.

But I've decided it may well be worth it to spend the money and get the hardware needed to actually calibrate the monitor(s). I figure between the monitors on my desk, a couple of laptops, and a flat panel TV, I should get my money's worth.

I was reading an article over at Toms Hardware, but they were using a Spyder4ELITE, which has since been replaced by the Spyder5. The reviews of the new version don't appear to be as good as the previous version.

I've also seen references to to the X-Rite i1 Display Pro ( Amazon.com : X-Rite i1Display Pro - Display Calibration (EODIS3) : Photographic Light Meters : Camera & Photo ), and it seems to be a solid choice as well.

Does anyone have any experience with any of these or have any other suggestions?

i1 display Pro is an excellent choice. It's solidly built by a great team, can read very low luminances, and is versatile enough to work fairly well with a large range of displays. If I had to choose one all around instrument, this is the one I would choose.
