Hi Guys, recently had my 7 year old LG LCD bite the dust and am looking for a new monitor. I've been researching for the past couple days, but am looking for some advice before I actually pull the trigger. I am also on a budget of around $200 CAD.

The monitor will be predominately used for gaming(for both PS4 and PC), though I will also be using it for everyday tasks like web browsing, comic reading, etc.

And the main issue I am having on deciding on what to actually buy, is if I should go with a TN or IPS panel. Currently looking at these monitors:

TN - BenQ RL2455HM

IPS - ASUS VN248H-P

ASUS VS239H-P

Acer H6 Series H236HLbid

My main concern with the IPS panels is though I do want the best possible picture, I don't want any noticeable ghosting or delay while gaming. I'm not gaming competitively, but I am very sensitive to image quirks. I also play a lot of MLB The Show and timing is very important.

1080p, 60Hz is fine.

TN is probably your best bet. Low delay. Fast pixels. I'd try for a Benq XL2411z if possible, or an Asus VG248QE. I know you said 60Hz is fine, but think of the future man.

I own (2) of the VN248H-P's and a Dell U2713HM. I also have a few high end Asus TN gaming panels that I replaced with the IPS monitors. After using only IPS for a while, I am sure I could never go back. The color difference is just that good. Just my opinion.
 
There is a thread some where around here where NCX comments on his view for 24 inch monitors. My personal preference is non-TN 10x16 (1920x1280) for 24inch; though i ended up biting the bullet and went with the AOC q27 (mostly because the 24 inch i saw were near the same price).

the problem with 'giving' advice is that different people have different sensitivity to latency, ghosting, glow, .... I'm curious to see if NCX thinks the AOC has a lot of glow because I don't think it is that bad (it has a little) and so far the latency and ghosting don't bother me (it runs a heck of a lot cooler than my old 2209wa). If I had to do it over - i might spend more time looking for a really good 22 or 24 inch monitor (this replaces the 2209wa that was fading).
 
Think I'm going to go with the ASUS VN248H-P IPS Panel.

Spent a day using my brothers BenQ TN panel(which is similar to the one I was looking at) and not happy with how it looks during everyday PC use.

I doubt the 3-4 ms difference will bother me too much while gaming on the PS4/PC.
 
No need to worry about response times when upgrading from a 7 year old monitor.

Opt for a flicker/PWM free (Read about PWM Side Effects) LG IPS (LG 23 or 24MP55HQ-P) for the same price over the Asus IPS which use PWM, or get a glossy Acer S236HL (newer, PWM free H236H) if you want an IPS panel with clearer and more vibrant colors.

The Samsung S24390H and S24590L are PWM free, pretty good and sold by Futureshop & Best Buy in Canada. Samsung AD-PLS information.

Well, I think the 7 year old LG I was using had 2ms response time iirc.

The Acer H236H was my other pick, but from what I read people were seeing slight ghosting while watching fast paced content. And most seemed to prefer ASUS over ACER for quality.

I'm not seeing the Samsung S24D590L available on any online Canadian stores. Though I do have a Best Buy and Futureshop relatively close by.

I wasn't even aware of AD-PLS.

Again using this for mostly PS4 gaming, with some PC gaming.

Will be using for everyday computer tasks too.
 
I also see the Asus VX239H listed under "Best 1920x1080 (16:9), LED PWM Dimming Free (Side Effects) 22-23" IPS panels". Would that be a better option because of the 1ms response time?

Edit: I actually don't see the 9H available in my Country, the 8H is though. Not sure of the difference between the two.

Edit 2 : 8H isn't an IPS Panel. I guess that's a big difference.

Edit 3: So while I wasn't able to find the S24D590L, I did find the 390 available. I do like the look of it.

The VX239H is not available in Canada. Futureshop sells the Samsung S24D590L which has 2x HDMI while the 390H only has 1x HDMI.

A 7 year old 2ms TN will likely be slower than a decent AHVA/IPS/PLS panel. The Acer IPS suffer some a bit of overshoot ghosting but it can be reduced by changing a setting in the service menu and they are as fast as 2ms TN's according to PRAD's oscilloscope measurements (H236H).

New Egg Canada carries the Acer S236HLtmjj but it is not in stock right now.

The S236HL was 160$ from New Egg a week ago, I would wait. You will have to use VGA with your PC if you want to keep both your console and PC connected.
 
I don't believe the Acer S236HLtmjj is available on any Canadians sites.
