I have not purchased anything for myself recently. Even worse, anything for myself technology wise. My computer is starting to think I don't care about it anymore. I've got some cash to burn, but can't pick what I really want, or need. Bear with me here...

Don't really want to spend more than a benjamen.

Here are my options.

1: I have 1 stick of Corsair 3200 512MB XMS memory. Should I get another stick and do dual channel? My processor is P4 3.0.

2: My Samsung CD-RW/DVD combo drive is broken due to a failed firmware flash. Could just RMA it for $8, but they might not send it back. I would RMA it, but the thought of them not repairing it due to a faulty flash scares me. I can deal without a CD-RW, but it would be nice to have. I was thinking about buying a Lite On DVD Writer.

3: I have a IC7-G Max 3 motherboard with onboard sound. I have a set of Logitech z-680 with dolby pro-logic decoder. I am running digital optical out to the speakers and it sounds just fine. The only thing that bites with onboard sound is the CPU usage during games. Should I get an Audigy 2 to run my sound?

4: Lastly, a fan controller. My fans are not beastly loud, but I would sure like to be able to turn them all off during bed time when I leave my computer on for downloading purposes. Just recently a fan controller came out that looks very sexy and has decent functionality. It is the first fan controller that I truely think that looks good.

So here are my choices

I would say go with the RAM, it will make every part of your system run faster. I don't know for sure but I've read somewhere(?) that most fan controllers don't work very well.

I'm starting to think memory too. The extra 512 and dual channel should help gaming performance/loading quite a bit with all these newer games. Is it a good time to buy memory or shall I wait a bit? Prices are high, i know, but they've been high for a while now.
 
Personally, I'd go for the RAM. 1gb is a must these days.

But... if you want a fan controller... I have a practically new Coolermaster Aerogate 2 for sale ;) It rocks, but my fans just weren't loud enough to justify all the extra wires.
 
I would get more RAM. P4's work so much better with a dual channel set up, and 1gb is pretty much a standard necessity these days.
