Molex vs PCI-e for GPU

One PSU I'm looking at has only 1 PCI-E power connector and some molex to pci-e for $100. For $150 I can get a modular one with 4x PCI-E connectors. Would this be better for crossfire?

As long as the cables themselves aren't cheaply made, either setup should be fine. With that said, if you need the ability to expand later on (i.e more than 8 hard drives, another video card, more DVD drives, more fans, maybe a water cooling set), maybe the $150 PSU might be the better choice since you're not tying up molex cables.

What PSUs are you looking at?

A $100 PSU that has only one PCI-E power connector? That is an automatic fail when you can get something like an XFX 750W PSU with four PCI-E power connectors for under $100 at newegg.com.

As someone else asked, what PSUs, what wattage? And more importantly, what are your system specs?

A PSU with only 1 PCIe connector most likely would not have the legs to power crossfire.

Always better to have hard wired connections, less likely to fail, in the case of power supplies, most PSU that ave more connectors also tend to be able to handle those connections.

XFX 650-750 are excellent, Corsair HX 650-750 as well as their TX V2 650-750, and ANTEC TP new 650-750 are all excellent, have plenty of connectors, and can easily supply thier rated output.

Molex connectors can work, but they also have a chance of slipping out be it the wires or burning out because they get overloaded. I as a user prefer to use the connectors designed for it, especially now a days, power supplies are decently priced and at least they are tested directly to supply the power they give out, those molex connectors are as well, but they may not be tested with a specific power supply.

Better to know, then to take a chance.

Alot of good power supplies out there, it helps to know your price range/needs. It would also help to know the power supply you are looking at/refering to.

You can get some pretty decent power supplies for ~$100 that can handle mid range crossfire/sli setups with all the proper connectors, modular, and you do not have to rely on molex connectors this way.
