I know some people have used heat guns.
A notable link would be Boddaker over at GvL. He built his own acrylic vacuum forming table using heating elements from ovens. He even posted some videos of the process IIRC.

heat gun, but you have to very careful of surface crazing / burning.
Another method is to build a form of the shape you want, heat your acrylic sheet in your oven at a ~220F and plop it on your form and start working it. Re-heat on the form, if the whole thing will fit in the oven. Do NOT leave this unattended for any length of time. Keep a careful watch on it.

When I did CrossFlow first I used a torch and it worked fine. Than I used a Heatgun (like a HD hairdryer) and it worked too.
Remember dont use MAX settings. I had best results at med (550 watts). Its really not that hard. Get a couple of pieces and practice on them first. Go slow too and make sure you spread the heat (dont let it sit in 1 place too long)
Cool thing is if you mes up just re-heat it and bend it again.
