Mods/programs to fix Windows 11

So I've finally moved to Windows 11, never really liked the looks of it. And, unsurprisingly Windows 11 isn't that great. Issues I've had so far, height of programs in the taskbar is too high, can't have multiple lines, width of programs are variable, rounded corners are terrible and a few other thing.

So what is the best way to get a classic UI that isn't dumbed down for the smartphone generation?

How many different optimization stream lining guides have you done?

How much time have you spent with Cmd Prompt, power shell and the Services GUI?

There are a lot of great windows 11 guides out there all the way from completely de-crapifying it to making it look like windows 7/XP.

StartAllBack addresses the start menu, allows for a W10 based taskbar (even after MS removed the code) including vertical alignment and four icon sizes (with proper 24px icon support unlike vanilla W11's taskbar which forcibly resizes 32px icons even when 24px are available). Also optionally allows for some minor File Explorer tweaks to match W7 or W10 behavior/appearance. Commercial but perpetual license.

Windhawk is by the same dev as 7+ Taskbar Tweaker (which for like a decade was great for taskbar adjustments). Unlike 7TT it's a framework for anyone to make open source Windows mods. Huge range of mods available. By default it hooks into everything so it's sometimes better to exclude all programs then whitelist ones you want. Open source/free.

I've been happy with just StartAllBack. Haven't had any issues across two different installs (and used their prior StartIsBack for a decade).

there are some start menu mods but youre better off just getting used to it, most will just fuck it up and then youll be mad at microsoft for no reason..

I can't speak for OP, but I'm mad at ms for very specific reasons.

- invasion of privacy
- forcing bing AND edge into the OS when they got their asses spanked for doing exactly that with IE
- installing crap without permission or even cause.

you said: "most will just fuck it up and then youll be mad at microsoft for no reason.."

so i gave you a list of exactly why the OP could be mad at microsoft.

sorry, didn't mean to confuse you with your own words.

Lots of stuff to get rid of and change. It takes a bit of work, but it works ok now.

I'd avoid mods/fixes/scripts - just go through all the Windows settings and 'naturally' turn off what you can and what you don't want/need - then the also (before) do this in BIOS - turning off virtualization/Secure Boot/TPM will disable most of the background security stuff that slows things down the most ('virtualization based security' being the biggest/heaviest resource hog in my experience)

This will require you do the 'requirements bypass' when installing Windows - but it doesn't 'break' things or constantly need to be applied/reapplied like most mods/fixes/scripts do

Again, know what you need though - if you need to make/use virtual machines, you need virtualization turned on - if you play a game like BF6 that needs Secure Boot/TPM - then you need Secure Boot/TPM - if you're a dummy who clicks every link and button on the internet that flashes before you - maybe you need all the security stuff

This is outside of and above and beyond just trying to get the old start button/menu back obviously

you honestly can just spend 2-5 hours with power shell and services GUI looking up what everything does and then decide what to remove and disable.

This was always part of the fun for me with computers and the information super high way.

I have seen to many people run scripts/modified installers break their OS and then come crying to me to fix their mistakes after the fact to give "advice" to people.

Only advice I give these days:
Do a stock install, if not happy go with linux, but do not contact me for support in that case.

If I had the time and money, I would go travel to people cryin online about their OS not working, do a stock install and let them show me what they do to break their OS and the ridicule them in public.

So you don't want to fix it, you want to break it to look the way you want it to.

I use Start All Back only because it allows me to place the taskbar vertically.
Found Here
I really liked and used for years Stardock's offering for manipulating Start Menu among many other things.
Start11 found here
I used them until they ended support for moving the task bar with Start10.
I always paid to use both products.
Indispensable IMHO

Well there is a lot of great advice and pointers here. But what I forget to mention is whatever modifying or breaking of the OS you do!

Make sure you do it all BEFORE you install all your apps, games and data!

that way its quicker to nuke it from orbit and restart, " oh yea ok that service I can't disable without breaking LOG IN GUI " :D which Ive done before twice.
