Modifying PSU cables

Would it be possible to change the end of my Corsair SATA power cable to a 90 degree connector like this? Corsair modular cables have that special black flexible coating, which is why I ask.

If it is possible, how easy would it be? Just pop off the current connector and pop this one on?

You're probably not going to be able to just "pop off" the existing connectors, they'll probably have to be cut off. Provided the cables have a large enough diameter (ie gauge of wire inside) you can crimp the 90 degree connectors on the wires. Be very careful that you install it the same as the ones you take off or you'll fry your HD.

I was afraid of that. I wanted to make it a 90 degree connector with the wires facing up, too, which would make it even more complicated. Oh well, its not a big deal.

I've added MANY of those to my PSU. I haven't messed with the corsair PSU's BUT I'm sure you can do it, just make sure that when you do, you don't confuse the wires. as the above poster said, that would be bad.

Good luck!

Connectors are OOS anyway... Frequent problem with Jab - they lost a decent sale here due to OOS on Zalman F3, so SVC got a $50. order instead. Those aren't that easy to get onto the wires w/o a proper punch-down tool anyway. I've gotten some of the 4-pin Molex RA connectors from Jab (almost always OOS on those too) and so far they have resisted my efforts at using them. Wish I could as they can neaten up drive wiring something fierce.

It doesn't really matter which way you put the connector on, wires down into the connector or wires up into the connector, as long as you get the right wires in the right slots.

This is the age-old punchdown <delete delete delete> insulation displacement tool I got for remaking floppy/ide cables back in the 90s... It can be adapted to punch down just about anything else tho with some creativity.

I use a small flat tip screw driver to punch the cables into the RA adapter things. Works well for me, and I don't need to go buy a new tool :D

Logan321,

That is not a punch-down tool, that is an ID (insulation displacement) Connector Press. I've got a vise downstairs that can do that. I'll have to look more closely at my connector caps to see if they can do the punch down themselves. On the flat cable connectors the pins of the contacts in the shells go up into the caps of the connectors. On the 90 degree Molex connectors, the contacts don't go up into the cap part - if they did it would be much easier. Yup, not like flat cable ID at all...

Really? That sucks... even decent rj-45 sockets have the contact pins go into the connector caps. Who designed the 90 degree molex/sata to suck then? :p

ps fixed my original post
