Okay so heres the deal. I'm not sure if it's my lines that suck or my modem or what. First off my internet is slow, I mean 56K is slow I know, but this is beyond anything you could imagine. A friend of mine running the same ISP in the same city gets easily twice what I do on downloads and webpages load significtly faster. So I am wondering WHY?!!!!!! I can start downloads at 10-15Kbp/s, then they slowly and inexorably slide down to 2-3kbp/s. What causes that?

Now I know my modem sucks ($30 Broadxent POS), how I know it sucks? Number one it's a winmodem, number two it barely supports the ability to tell me what firmware version it has much less being able to run a line noise test. But I've had crummy modems in the past and I think this is a little bit ridicolus, the speed(or lack there of) that I have.

So I am wondering are there any ways to either circumvent line noise or squeeze some more performance out of this pile? I've tried running it on diffrent PCI slots, using the LINE or PHONE jack on it, nothing that obvious seems to work. Are there any programs like CableNut or some hardware tweeks that can help me out here?
