I'm having some trouble with my modem. I need to connect it to my PC with a USB cable so that I can free up my ethernet port but whenever I connect via USB the computer does not recognize the connection. I think the problem is with my OS. This is cause I've done it on an older OS and had no problems. I don't know. So far though I believe that the problem may be with my network connections settings. When I was working with my settings in network connections, I noticed that there was an asigned IP address for the connection. So I canged it so that it would obtain a new address automaticlly. I did this and pressed repare but when it finished it said
The IP addess could not be renewed
Please contact your network administrator or your ISP

I don't know wut to do. Is this even the problem?!?!?!? HELP

Did you set up the drivers properly when you put it in the USB port? And did you uninstall the device before you unplugged it from the Ethernet Port? It sounds like that is the problem, cause its still looking for an IP address and it isn't there.

um...

What OS?
What make/model cable modem?
What ISP?
Usb ports on your motherboard? What make/model motherboard?
Usb ports on pci card? What make/model card?
Any other USB devices attached that are working properly?
Did you install the newest USB drivers for the cable modem?
