Okay this is a strange on and the only information that I gained was from a PC challenged individual on the phone.

Okay the info :

Old Dell Optiplex GX1
OS : Windows 2000 Pro
LAN Card Linksys 10/100 V5
Modem (Not sure what model)
Okay I get a call from him, and his wife is frantic, she tried installing earthlink software and it said that the do not have a modem installed. So I walk him through a couple of grueling steps, had him check device manager to see if the modem was there and the driver loaded, and it was. Had him check to see if he had the TCP/IP protocal installed which he said he did.
In device manager is show his modem and his LAN adapter, and all other things show up and act fine what could be the problem.

What could be the problem.

Has he changed anything inside the computer recently? If so, have him move the modem to a new PCI slot, sometimes that will fix really strange problems.

He just recently installed had the modem installed the day before if I recall. Thats the only new thing that he had done to it.

Is he using a Creative sound card? See if he can move the modem to a different slot anyway. It'll probably fix the problem assuming the software side is okay.

No its all onboard stuff except for the modem and extra :LAN. When I asked him why there was an onboard lan and a lan card installed he had no idea but wanted the extra one left in. Strange thing is you can see it in the device manager, but the software will not detect it.

Yea, all I can think of now is the standard uninstall-reinstall routine, sorry.

Is the modem compatible with the Earthlink software? This is the kind of problem you have to sit down in front of. You will not be able to resolve this with a PC challenged person, over the phone.

Yeah thats what I told him last night, when he stopped over, but our schedules don't mesh and his wifes impatient. Oh well he has to deal with her not me, I told him that when we both have free time I'll stop over and see if I can resolve it for him. There is alot to be said for patience I guess. He's cool about waiting so alls good for me, maybe not for him :)

I use Earthlink for dial-up on the road but I don't bother with their software, since it's not needed to make a connection. You can make a shortcut for the connection fairly easily (my instructions are for XP, dunno about 2000):

Explore to My Computer -> Network Viewer -> View Network Connections
Click "Create a new connection"
Go through the wizard, choosing "Set up my connection manually" and "Connect using a dial-up modem"
The wizard will prompt for a name - just choose any old name that you want to give for the shortcut.
Enter the local dial-up number (you can find these at http://support.earthlink.net/support/ACCESS/ )
Enter the user name and password. The user name will be something like joeblow69@earthlink.net
On the last screen, click the box to create a desktop shortcut.

This will let you test out the modem and his connection to EL. If that works, well, then you know it's something goofy between the software and his hardware.
