Ok, im trying to take the 56k modem out of this computer and put it in a diffrent computer. This computer is using a cable modem but theres also a 56k inside. When i uninstall the modem driver, and take it out. This comp wont boot up. I get the blue HP screen and nothing else. Anyone know who i could fix this?

You gotta be a little more precise than that...I'm not sure I understand your question...or rather comment...

- You took a modem out of another computer
- To install it into a computer that has a modem in it already?

That's what I got out of it...please expand a bit...

Ok, i want to put the 56k modem from this computer into another computer. the computer im putting it into does not have a 56k modem. The problem i have, is when i take out the 56k from this computer, THIS computer wont restart.

Ah ok...thank you...Are you sure you are just installing the driver for the modem, you might be taking off another system file...What method are you using to Un-Install the driver?

What method...ah i just click uninstall. It is the right driver, im sure of that

Was there anything hooked into the Modem at the Time? Erm, did you check your Network Connection and Dial-Up Adapters to see if the features/protocals set to the Modem were un-installed...

When you Un-Installed you went to the Device Manager under Modems and Un-Installed, am I correct on that, or did you do it a different way...

You un-installed the Driver First, then the Modem?

Yes i went through Device Manager.

I uninstaled the driver first.

Was there anything hooked into the Modem at the Time

No

Say What? This modem is not connected to the internet.

When in your last machine, it just sat there, it was never connected to the internet?

Protocols get installed, check it...And did you perform the tests...I could be barking up the wrong tree, and I could be barking up the right one, only way to tell is to try...

It shouldnt have a problem like this. Windows is normally good about handling missing equipment. Is this windows xp? 98? 95?

What you're saying is, this computer posts (post = power on self test, youll hear a beep) But wont load windows? Or without the modem it wont "post" ?

XP

The computer turns on, and goes to the Blue HP screen. But its just stays at the blue HP screen and doesnt load into windows.

I put the modem back in, and the comp works fine, take it out agian and i get the same problem.

hrmmm, I take it the driver isn't un-installed then...If you took it out and it didn't work, then you stuck it back in, and it did, then you might wanna double check that the driver is un-installed...

Device Manager...double check it out...and do a

Start>Control Panel>Network Connections...

Check and see if there is anything installed for the Modem...if so, delete it...

Since he's not getting past POST and it never sees the OS this isn't a software issue. Chances are there is an error message there somewhere. The Blue HP screen is just something they lay over the BIOS' POST. Hit ESC as soon as you see that blue HP screen and it will likely show you the POST screen counting the RAM looking at the IDE drives and whatnot. I'd bet you see an error. If not it's likely a setting in the BIOS you need to change to show the hardware isn't there. I'm kinda at a loss since I can't think of any BIOS setting that would care about a modem being removed, hopefully the error will point you somewhere. You may also be able to hit a key to bypass the error, or switch the error reporting in the BIOS to inform only instead of stopping on error. Good luck.

Wow, it took 13 posts to get to one person that knew what he was talking about. The [H] isn't what it used to be.

HP screen is way before any OS starts to load so all that checking was a waste of time. Do as above and hit esc as soon as the HP logo shows up to see if there are any error messages. To get into the Bios, hit f10 when that logo shows up. I'd would look to see if it has some sort of IRQ set for the modem. Normally thats just a reservation and shouldn't cause a problem.

BTW, what model of HP. It may need a bios update which you can usually get from their website.

It may have been 13 posts, but it was only >2hours, and I beat you. :p

It's not about being fast, it's about being right. Besides anyone is welcome to a complete and total refund. :D

edit: oh, and a BIOS update may solve such an odd thing, so good call.

Did you try the stuff I mentioned? Also, if that doesn't work give us the model number off of the machine, not it's CPU speed. HP probably made dozes of different machines with any given CPU speed.

Well its fixed, and by mistake mind you. I put the modem back in, and then when i took it out i forgot to turn the computer off...go figure lol. and well i restared and everything fine...so lol

so basically you have been installing and removing a component from a live, working computer...

hehe... wouldn't have the first time internet advice almost killed someone....

I guess,

heh.

OK, now that I'm done banging my head against the wall. I think you need to keep you hands out of a PC until you get the basics down. Your quite lucky either of these machines is working if you have been installing and removing stuff with the power on. The modem may also be bad now...

I was under the impression that he was having an OS problem...he said XP in one of the threads...Got mixed up by it...sorry...but, anywho, nothing I could've done to have helped that one...LOL...I gues sa new Troubleshooting question for folks should be...

Did you turn the power off before you started?

hehe...

Apparently we both forgot the golden rule:

Never underestimate the stupidity of a (new) user.

(With applogies to AdamNF)

You guys shoulda known it was a user error issue when they said the pc wouldn't boot from simply removing a modem.
:D

No, it's not our fault. I reserve those responses for lusers, which may happen into our forum by accident... Everyone here is not a luser, therefore they are spared the basic-basics.

I'd be flamed for giving 'did you check the cable' connection... :p

no no no no no. I havnt been installing/ uninstalling new hardware with the PC on. I took out the modem once but mistake while the pc wads on...just a simple mistake
