My computer is having problems with the modem right now. I've checked the modem, everything seems to be working just fine.

However, when I disconnect purposely, and try to sign on the internet again, it doesn't want to connect. It says there is no dial tone and I have to check the line.

When I plug in a phone to the line, pick up and check for a tone, there is one. When I hang up, put the cord back in the computer, it works like a charm.

It seems like I have to do this everytime I want to connect to the internet, which sucks.

Is there any fix for this?

Thanks in advance.

It sounds like your modem isnt "hanging up" You could try updating drivers, or buying a new one.

I think some areas use certain specifications for hanging up. Your modem may not be compatable with the way the utility company does it. (if im rembering right, been awhile since i played with modems)

get cable! you wont have to redial then

Yea i doubt he can get cable in his area if he is on a dial-up modem. I'm on a external USB dial-up modem and i can't get anything else. About the only place you can get cable is in the middle of town. If you live on the outskirts your not going to be getting cable. And i live in the boonies.

Before I would ditch the modem, make sure to check a few things out, it seems that your modem may be keeping the port open, or if you have to wait a few seconds for a dial tone, then enter a few commas before the number, it makes the modem pause then pick up the line. If that fails then you could always manually hang the modem up, you would need to research the exact command for you brand of modem, even possibly put it in the init string for the modem, if that fails.... Ditch it.

I don't think "switching to cable" helps my problem. That would be like telling me to buy a new computer rather than check loose cables.

Anyway, after an hour of troubleshooting, I swapped the modem with a friend's and everything is working just fine now. My friend got the "dead" modem to work just fine.

Definitely something in my computer's drivers/software that is causing the problem.

Thanks for the replies.
