what equipment are you using? and what aperture? i thought model shoots wanted much less DoF then you have in yours, to throw the background out of focus. The pictures just look very "flat" to me for some reason.

My only other comment was the lighting reflections in some of the pictures off the models dont look so great to me, that might be a makeup thing though.

Read this thread for detailed info.

300D, 50 1.8 lens, ISO 100, 1/125 sec. The pro photographer who was working on this shoot with me was using the same settings, but with a 20D. Keep in mind he's shot Destiny Child, Coldplay, and the Detroit Lions all in the past month or so.

And there is absolutely no reason why the background "has" to be OOF that I know of. That particular technique is typically used with one of those cheesy senior portrait type backdrops.
 
was he also using a 50/1.8 ? that seems like a short lens to be using. (that link doesnt work for me).

He was using a 50 1.4. 50mm is one of the most commonly used focal lengths for portrait work.. Just curious, but do you have any actual experience on the subject? And the link works fine.
 
50mm on a 300D works out to a 35mm equil. of about 80mm. (1.6x crop factor)

And that link works but you have to log in, not going to register to see it.
 
Yeah 80mm IS short... like 2x zoom on a digicam... as long as your camera is right in the nose all the time you're fine! I suppose if you have cute models the shorter lens the better... "sorry I have to be 3 inches from you in order for this to work" :D

Ahh crap, I forgot you have to be a member to view the "People" forum on Fredmiranda. Not sure why exactly.

But anyway, 80mm is plenty for studio work. And I was a good 3-4 feet back when shooting most of these (not that I would have minded being closer :) ).
 
50mm is fine with that Cam. Anything between 70-135mm equilvant is normal for studio work. I usually stick to my 70-200mm IS for those that have really bad breath regardless of the physical appeal of the subject :) In some circumstances, Mentos and 17-40mm L work too. Nice pics!
