Modding the Corsair H50

Hi guys. I ordered a Corsair H50 and I've heard good things, but I was just curious if any of you had experience customing one.

I don't really want to go all out, but I don't like the fact that you have to mount it on the back of the case which results in having warm air being blown into the case.

How easy would it be for me to make the tubes longer and replace the pump? I had saltwater fish tanks, and I have a brand new pump that is just sitting in a box. It's powerful too.

I don't remember off hand because it's in my other apartment and I haven't looked at it in a while, but I think it's one of the following:

Eim 1048, 1250, or 1260.


Like I said, I was thinking of using my big pump, lenghten the tubes and maybe...maybe get a dual or triple radiator. But from what I've heard they already do a good job, so I'm more concerned with placing the rad and fan in a different place.

??? Why would you buy a closed loop premade H50 when you actually wanted to watercool the CPU? That's like buying an Alienware, then taking everything out of it and replacing the components.

You can mount the H50 any freaking way you want. Corsair's recommendations are only for consideration of the CPU temperature, which for obvious marketing reasons makes sense, but for actual usage reasons, do end users benefit from a heat intake source? You can figure that out.

If you're thinking of doing that then you may as well just build a WC loop from scratch. The only mods people have really done is fatter tubing and diffrerent rad but you need to bleed it properly in good coolant etc to keep it a closed unit.
So yeah you may as well just build a proper loop if you want to start doing so much with a closed unit.

I have a Lian Li PC60B, I have the H50 mounted on CPU with tubes going East, and mounted the radiator up the top of the case above the ODD with the fan blowing directly on the radiator, which acts as my only case intake, everything else to push air out.... My Ph2 955 Deneb runs, at full load at about 100F with no problems.

You do not need to mod this unit, it is completely fine. If you want to give it a paint job, thats one thing, but it needs NO hardware mod's.

I am in the same boat as you. I bought the h50, it works, but I was already thinking of modding it. Temps are ok. but not great.

I already had a ehiem 1250 pump, and a big truck rad from an old water cool project.

You know, I just ordered a apogee waterblock the new one xt or whatever. and hooked up my fish pump and rad (with no fan I might add)

I just finished this. and the temps are alot better.

Idling before with h50 was 39c and I am now at 21c

I havn't prime95'ed it yet. but I am thinking its gonna kick ass over the h50......

You have the pump already, get some sorta rad and a water block and just leave the h50 stock as a backup or something.


also, I was prime 95 with the h50 and it ran fine. just really fricken hot. soo.... depends on what u want.

hmmmm, OK. Like I said, I heard it's a pretty solid unit, but I find it retarded that they would suggest mounting it in such a fashion that sucks cold air throught it, but then directly into the case.

I only wanted to make the tubes longer so I could customize the mounting a bit.

I was thinking of getting three in spacers and mounting it like this:

If I mount it that far away, I was thinking I could direct the warm air down (I would make up a air flow control device) and then have the rear case fan still do it's normal job and not have warm air being drawn into the case.

Do you think I could just grab a danger den double rad, some new tubbing, and keep the H50 water block? That would save me $50 on a project that I'm already spending more than I wanted to

I heard somewhere you can change the rad on it, but the pump might not be strong enough to pump it. (or might not last long) Also, you'd have to put the rad and the block underwater to fill it so as not to trap any air inside.

Probley would work. But after just buying a new waterblock that preforms alot better then the h50 ever did, I don't even want to look at the h50 anymore.
