Although it seems to be more popular with newer 8788 based card such as the XM, There are quite a few guys modding X-fi's to improve their sound quality. Here is a good thread about it:

I think you would need a pretty steady hand to change Surface mount Opamps. They do it though. Modding soundcards seems to be all the rage these days
If anyone find this information interesting and is thinking of modding their card, can you post it here of what modification your considering doing? It may help others who are interested. If you look at some of the measured numbers before and after even a simple mod like passive sheilding you see there is alot of promise in simple modifications. People here may be interested or maybe not..we shall see.
