Modding Side Panel Fans

I'm not a "fan" of my side panel being tethered to the Mobo via fan wires. I found the side panel power mod at Gruntville and tried it but could not get it to work.

I'm pretty sure its because the the power won't transfer correctly to the phone cable and rj11 plug (connected altered fan wires to altered 3-pin extension cable and that worked). Followed the instructions (red fan wire/3-pin extension cable wire to the RED and BLACK wires on the rj11/phone cable and BLACK fan wire to the GREEN and YELLOW wires).

So my question is, does anyone else have experience with a mod like this? Did any try that specific mod and have it work? I'd appreciate any time of help on this.
 
I'm guessing no one has done this or has an interest in doing this type of mod?
