So, I have decided that it is time to get the compies outta my room... and into the closet. I have ample room in my closet above the clothes that has remained untouched.

So I cleaned out the crap, reorganized, and I am hanging the bare PC's on the wall up there. They will all be naked systems with only the things needed to fold.

My question though is... Is sheetrock or paint conductive? If I mount directly to the wall without any gaps, will I short anything?

If so, what is the best way to make standoffs to go into sheetrock? Right now, I am thinking wall anchors with some spacers on them.
 
No and no, unless you are using metallic paint, im pretty sure sheetrock is an insulator you shouldnt have any problems, but it doesnt hurt to put rubber grommets under your screws.
 
I used plastic wall anchors but I didnt sink them in all the way so it heald on but it still gave me the clearence of a regular motherboard riser.
 
What you could use is those metal butterfly anchors that spread out to 180 degrees when you release them, with a rubber grommet or washer underneath the mobo, the screws that they use for those are pretty thin, so they should fit no problem. Thats what I would do.

I used the same thing, except they are plastic. I don't need steel to hold up a mobo. :p

Well, its in there, and it looks pretty sick. I can't wait to get more up there. I have room for 4 total with a little rom to spare if I want to put more up there. Only problem is, I had to move the PSU as I couldn't get the cord into it. Well, I didn't think it out well enough, and it is in the way of the OB video. I don't know if it will work there, so I may have to move the PSU again. I have plenty of room, so this won't be a problem.

I happened to get lucky and had enough plates and things to mount the naked PSU, HDD, and mobo. But, now I am out of all of it. It all came off an old Compaq and an old Dell PIII. I guess I am going to have to fashion some stuff out of sheet metal. No biggie, I'm going to work tomorrow, I'll bring the stuff and fashion it. It should turn out cleaner than the spare parts job. :p

I need to see what I have for parts laying around and see if I can get some more PC's running from the pile of rubble. Only problem is, I'm short on HDDs. I'm going to need to find some <10Gb HDDs on the cheap or freebies.

Tomorrow I'll pick up some more CAT5, a power strip, and extension cord, and some HDDs.

Now that we are unlocked again...

What should I put for cooling in there? The PSUs will be naked with a fan to cool them. The processors will have a fan obviously, and the PCs are naked. But, is that enough to cool them if the closet is closed or do I need more?

I am thinking about attaching a fan to the bottom of the shelf facing up towards the PCs. It is a wire shelf, so air flow will be close to 100%. I only want to do this if I need to. I still need to fit clothing in there remember. :D

Also, I'll have pics by the end of tomorrow to help you visualize a bit better the situation. Its a bit late and I don't know where my camera is nor do I feel like looking for it. But pics will be here soon.

So far with the one PC, it looks pretty badass. I'll have it running tomorrow and I'll start on the second PC.
 
My uncle has some Juniper and Cisco servers/routers/vpn's in his closet.. but they are mounted to a rackmount unit in there on the wall. But for cooling, he installed small vented fans on the ceiling that go into the attic. I don't know if you want to cut a hole in the ceiling for fans/vents, but it helps.
 
With clothes comes static electricity. Will there be any protection against ESD?
 
Well, the clotes are about 2-3 feet below the PC's. I left enough room to prevent static from jumping around. Plus, the rack they are hanging on is rubber coated so it will prevent some static.

It can't be any worse than my PC sitting at my feet while I'm wearing clothes or walkig across the carpet near it. I think it will be far enough away.
 
The power supply is supposed to ground your computer anyways, its bare components that are not connected that you have to worry about. As for cooling, I would just put a room fan in there, there will be more than enough room for air to move, so I wouldn't worry about it too much, as long as they all have heatsinks.
 
You should be fine on temps, you might want to route an AC vent into the closet though. Install SpeedFan on each and watch load temps also, you don't want to kill anything.
 
Yeah it would get pretty hot in there I would guess, my room with 1 pc in it heats up pretty quickly when my door is closed.
