Modding mp3 players to add memory?

wasn't sure where to put this topis or if it's even possible to do...

I've got a 256meg mp3 player that doesn't have a card slot for upgrading the memory. would it be possible to solder/glue/ducktape a usb pen-drive or a SD card to it to expand the memory?

i know its kinda crazy but it just wanted to know if it was possible.
 
It really depends on the internal components, especially the type of flash(card) used, and whether or not the controller supports different sizes.

You'll have to find information on the specific mp3-player you're planning to perform this surgery on (perhaps someone else has already done this mod, or the manufacturer has published some technical specs), or dissect it yourself

Most mp3-players are quite modular, so as to reduce manufacturing costs (having seperate production lines for a number of players is more expensive than having lots of generic components), so this mod might be possible.

thanks for the tips, its an MSI mega palyer 515, i'll look for the tech info, i'd have a look myself but dont see any way to open the damn thing :-/
 
If the same company makes higher capacity models of the same series mp3 player, it's possible. What I'd do is I'd first flash it with the firmware for the larger capacity mp3 player, then desolder the old memory chips and replace them with the larger capacity chips. But soldering the kinds of chip packages used in memory is not easy at all. And that only might work. I'd reccomend just giving up the idea - it'd be WAYYYY more work than is reasonable, and it only *might* work.
