Ok, I need a metal that is easily cut, not too flimsy, and can be found somewhere like a hardware store

You could try aluminum flashing. Really easy to cut with nice sheet metal shears, cheap, and not too flimsy, but it is formable.
 
Steel is really a pain to use unless you're doing straight cuts. Even then, having a shear would be best.

Aluminum is a lot softer and easier to deal with. However if you want to go a bit cheaper, work with 1/8" acrylic.
 
home depo sells some aluminum sheet goods, just use your hands to bend the sheet, and see if its sturdy enough for your application, you be the engineer. Its pretty easy to work with any aluminum below 1/16th of an inch at home as simple tin snips will cut it.
