Modding disaster...help!

I've been building PC's for a while now and finally decided to jump on the modding bandwagon. I bought a Lian Li PC-7 Plus case and made 4 cuts to it. The first was up top near the PSU so that I could run wires behind the mobo tray and cages. The second was in the bottom 5 1/4 drive bay so I could run the power supply cables out through it to my motherboard. My third was in the upper left of the mobo tray so that I could run my CPU and rear fan molex connectors behind the mobo and out the back of the mobo tray. My last cut was the bottom right of the mobo tray so i could run my Audigy cable, front connectors, and SATA cables under the mobo. Every cut was sanded down and the wrapped in electrical tape so there were no exposed sharp edges. All in all, I thought it was a damn good job. Anyway, I ran all my wires and turned on the PC, and the dreaded pop and smoke happened. My rear case fan power wire somehow shorted out and completely melted to the case and the motherboard. I somehow shorted out the fan and I can't figure out how. What did I do wrong and how can I prevent this from happening again? I'm assuming it was my fault somehow and am afraid to try again. Thanks for the help guys
 
did ya leave any metal shavins in the case? or did ya air blast em out .. with compressed air or whatnot?
 
got pics?? It may help, but you're really down to a few posibilities:

1. The PSU was about to melt down anyway.
2. Some undetected shavings were still there and caused a short.
3. You left the hardware close and uncovered when you were cutting and some filings shorted them when you plugged them in.
4. Something else I haven't thought of, but someone else will point out. ;)
