modding an Audigy 2 ZS...

If you mean soft-modding it to a Audigy 4 Pro, then yeah I guess its worth it considering its pretty much effort less. Sound wise its not too much of a difference, but I do prefer Audigy 4's software over Audigy 2's.

like, i read that all these audigy 2 ZS cards can have modded caps. i wanna do this to the card, but if it isn't worth it then i'll throw it out the window.

I'm not sure about the caps, but I own a modded Audigy 2 ZS. I had the opamps replaced a while ago (to AD8620s or 10s I think). I thought there was a decent improvement in the sound. Tighter bass and more dynamics was what I remember from my impressions a long time ago.

I sent my card off to MisterX. This was a good 3-4 years ago, so I don't know if he'll mod them anymore.

Def replace the opamps for the best effect. Won't be a huge improvement in an Audigy 2 but it's better than a softmod. That card is really a jack of all trades. Master of none, but does most things just fine (gaming comes to mind with EAX).
