Modding airflow inside a Rocketfish

I am wanting to add some sort of divider/partition on the inside of my Rocketfish case to improve airflow over the motherboard.

My idea was to isolate the PSU with a divider from the rest of the case, and add a couple 120mm exhaust fans on the top of the rig.

I am a bit clueless what material and how to adhere the divider, or what would be the optimum way to approach this. Anyone have any experience with this sort of thing?

I'm currently working on that with my rocketfish worklog. I am using a 24x24 sheet of 1mm thick aluminum. I made a brake and used thin cardboard for a template. So far I have my template traced onto the aluminum and I'm using straight cut shears to cut it out.

The key is to leave "Tabs" in the design because those you will bend 90 degrees to use as mounting points with the brake (which is a device that basically hinges to create a 90 in the alum material).

Then do 1 of 2 things. Tap out to 1/8th to screw together or drill a hole and use a 1/8th inch rivet.

I have been taking pics of the process, just waiting to finish it until I post an update. It's quite simple to use this method and make a decent shroud.

Ok so lets say you do that, and now you have 3 120mm exhaust fans for the motherboard. Where are you going to bring in the cold air from? I was thinking about doing this, and just removing 3 of the optical drive covers and putting mesh there.

You could also use the 5.25 to 3.5 with 120 fan adapter to help bring air into the case.


I did something really easy and at idle it has dropped my temps 6 to 8 degrees.

I took the slot fan that mounts over the video card area and mounted to the top of the ventilated area on the back of the case with the fan facing down pulling the hot air out the back. My idle temps on my e6600 went from 38ish to 31*.

You could also use the 5.25 to 3.5 with 120 fan adapter to help bring air into the case.

This sounds great, does Lian Li make a part for this? Or just any part for that matter, I have 5 open 5.25 bays.

Well I'm in the process of building and I'm going to do a negative pressure set-up.

In lieu of cutting a hole in the top of the case, I transferred the intake arm that normally sits over the PCI slots, reversed the fan to an exhaust, and bolted it onto the vertical vents on the top, rear portion of the vent. I'll be running with no partition and will see how this works. My thoughts are the exhaust is in the approximate location a blowhole would be, it's just venting horizontally in lieu of a true vertical escape for air. I'll likely try it a few ways to see what works better. If it becomes an issue, I'll also add that top vent and perhaps a true side vent.

Airflow will be 1 120mm in the front for the intake, 1 rear 120mm exhaust, 1 top/rear 120mm exhaust. I'm thinking the plentiful amounts of venting on the bottom of the case will allow plenty of fresh air to come in via the negative pressure.

Yeah, DON'T BUY THE 343 PART.
I bought one for my V1000, it does not fit. The mount holes are not standard so the part apparently only works for the 343 cube cases.

I bought an Antec 900 drive bay converter from...Antec... for $19.95. Came with a TriCool fan as well. Plus unlike the Kama Bay, you can actually mount 3 drives in it if you'd like.

Just a little update here.. I was thinking about this, and the way my PC is setup, the back is fairly close to the wall. I had the slot fan running as intake, however when I stuck my hand behind the case, that whole area was hot air, so the slot cooler was sucking in hot air that the rear case fan was exhausting, and just recycling it back through the case. I move the slot fan up over the CPU and my load temps went down ~5C with no change in ambient temp

Sweet tip! I'm water-cooling my new Li'Lfish rig, and was looking for a way to get some airflow over the mosfet sinks.
