Modding a TV for my Dad

+1

also u could do something a little different in regards to the panels on hinges..

i don’t know where you were planning to hinge them, BUT you could instead use a locking system like some wooden file cab's use, but hidden away, and then use the same rails that they use on nicer drawers.. the BB closed slides that you slide out fully then press the small lever to release, (not the kind that you pull out and then lift, the kind that you can pull out and shake but it wont come off till you press the release)

that way instead of swinging out, you can just slide the entire side off, and even include the left and right face, leaving plenty of room to get in the side/front and access the lcd connections/cases behind, even while the entire "tv" is against a wall, and in close proximity to surrounding furniture.. OR this would be an option for the rack mount cases to be accessed/removed w/o moving the whole “tv” from it’s position..

basically the front fascia will be secured to the side "cosmetic" pieces, which will be trimmed to have rails on the in side top and inside bottom edge (as it were to sit if it was put together) you would have the locking system either somehow hidden in the front, or maybe under side, using a simple lever..

and to prevent any rigidity issues, you could use simple steel supports on the corners with triangle pieces and around the front/sides of the lcd, which could also allow you to make a mounting bracket out of some more steel tube/u-channel with a flat area to secure the lcd to, and just some minor felt padding on the edge of the front fascia to prevent any rattle and damage to the lcd..

another thought, getting the gas charged “hood” or “hatch” supports and using those to make the “top” open, you get the idea. And this could leave another form of access for simple wiring changes w/o having to move the beast of a loaded “tv”

Well I was contemplating having the side panels slide out and be locked. However I really want the case to be as sturdy as it was before.
This is actually hard to explain without pics.

I'll attempt to anyway, but I'll need to come back with pics.
When I first started taking apart the frame I thought the entire front panel was solid wood.
Turns out it was just plastic attatched to 1" thick particle board.

Now in order for this to look good the screen has to be right behind the plastic, since the screen extends about an inch in all directions I need to find a clever way of mounting the plastic to a board that will support it, but will be smaller than the width of the plastic panels.

That probably didn't come out well.
The workarea is a mess, I'll clean it up and take pictures in a few.

One thing that you might want to try is getting some small, like 1" wide, metal brace plates that are of the proper length and then make a small frame that will be the proper size to go around the screen. For the backside, to protect the screen, use felt tape or felt weather stripping.

I demand an update!

Very original and interesting design.

Do you plan to build the htpc inside of it when you do get around to doin the htpc?

that would be cool..

If you make a guide you could use a router and a shank bit to widen the opening to the size you need it. With some careful depth probing you should be able to get the size/position you need without having to disassemble or rebuild the whole thing.

I dissambled the whole thing already.
Mainly because I had to drop the floor and the way it was put together (with glue and massive amounts of screws) it wasn't worth it to just hack out the floor.

Pics soon though.

I am buying a new tablesaw and a router, I've been putting it off for a bit.
There is actually a metal shop down the way who made the runners for my deck the other year, I can probably get them to create a cradle to hold the screen in place.

Although I'll probably do it out of wood.

I think I should spend some time and work out a new sketchup diagram of how I plan on building the unit.
I want it to be just as ridgid as it was before because odds are I'll be moving it in the near future and don't want it to be delicate.

Anyway give me a few and I'll give you updates.

Ooooo!!!! That's nice!!! My folks have an old one of those sitting in the garage at my sisters house.

Ya know... Christmas is roughly 3 months away...

Ya know... Seeing things like that remind me of the good ol' days, way back when TV's were still considered as a part of the furniture. Instead of what they're thought of as today.

Heck it almost wants me to start scavanging the Goodwill's & thrift stores for them.

Crap. Now I'm going to have to start doing that too. I already pull old recievers and DVD/CD players out of the trash all the time.

Anyways I would have probably gone with this TV but I guess it's alittle too late to be saying that.

Your project looks very interesting. :)

You know this weekend I came across a one sided mirror that was designed to be placed in front of an lcd screen. It wasn't a standard one sided mirror (those tend to blur the image coming through it).

Obviously not something I would use for this mod, but it got me thinking to other practical uses.

I have an old compaq laptop that I wouldn't mind tearing apart and putting behind a mirror.
This is neither here nor there though.

This weekend I was busy with other projects. I've post a more valid update soon.
