modding a power supply?

I just put my new build together in a CM Storm Enforcer case. Cable management was good, but there it not a lot of space behind the motherboard tray. What is giving me the most headache it to sets of IDE power plugs. the cables are trouble, but the plugs themselves are clunky. My power supply is a Corsair VX550 550w. How difficult is this build, what is the risk of damaging my power supply or making it unsafe and damaging my rig? I know I will void my warranty.

What exactly are you asking? Do you want to cut off the extra connectors you don't need? If so, then that's perfectly safe. Just make sure to cover the cut ends of the wires with something non-conductive, like electrical tape.

Yes, I want to cut off the extra wires. I hope that I can cut them off so that the taped up ends are inside of the power supply where they don't show.

That should be fine.

I would use heatshrink (preferablly adhesive lined) rather than tape. Electrical tape has a nasty habbit of drying up and falling off over time.

This. Using electrical tape to seal off live wires can end up badly down the line.

Also, cut the cables one at a time.. cutting all 4 at once carries the possibility of shorting it out if its not been completely discharged.

I would unplug it and let it sit for at least overnight before you do anything inside it.

I'd say desoldering them is just increasing the risk of damage for no good reason. If you want to remove them completely then just cut them off flush with the board using miniture side cutters.

Does de-soldering require much skill? It sounds like the best option. If there much risk of damaging the unit by doing this?

If you asked this question you dont have the skill to do it safely. Cut them off and heat shrink them.

Desoldering things from a PSU can be difficult and would require a powerful soldering iron. It's easier just to cut the wires.

Alternately, If you want to mod the PSU without voiding the warranty, get a pin pusher to remove the molex ends, heat shrink each end invidually, this should allow you to flatten them enough to get them under the mobo tray.. Just hold onto the connectors in case you ever need to return for RMA.
